a brief caliber question...
    #8050396 - 02/21/08 02:10 AM (15 years, 11 months ago)

I'm going to be purchasing a rifle in the coming months. I have decided that my second firearm will be a Mauser, www.mauser.org - from this site.

I definitely will be purchasing a Mauser 98K. I have not decided between the "Historical 98K Model 48 Mauser Rifle", and the "Historical K98 Mauser Rifle".
As far as I can tell, the only difference is that the latter are surviving German rifles, whereas the former are mainly from Serbia, though they appear to be a more complete package, including bayonet and other stuff. I'll probably end up with the M48 since they are a higher quality rifle. I do not, however, know whether to get the service grade, premium grade or collector grade. In the case of the M48, probably the collector grade as it is $200 less than premium.

Now for the real question. After I purchase the original Mauser, I want to purchase their "new" M63 Tanker Mauser. I really like the look of this rifle, and feel it would compliment my other firearms well. The 98K's are original Mausers. They fire 8mm ammunition (7.92x57mm Mauser). No choice there, no problem. On the M63, there is a caliber option: 8mm (7.92x57mm Mauser), .30-06 Springfield, .308 Winchester, .270 Winchester, or .243 Winchester.

A good friend of mine owns an identical M48, which he absolutely loves (and so do I :drooling:). But he says the cost of shooting his Mauser has skyrocketed because of the cost of brass, etc. OK. Bottom line is 8mm is becoming more and more expensive. I will pop for it for my M48 (as he does), but for the M63, I am leaning towards the .30-06. I know the .30-06 is a fantastic cartridge, and am wondering other opinions versus the .308 Winchester (and possibly, but unlikely .270).

Please consider cost vs performance.
Thanks!

Mausers are the shit. I love sniper rifles, though. Even though I don't have one.

I grew up deer hunting shooting 30.06's and feel really comfortable with a .308. I really don't feel much of a difference.

But a 30.06 is a really nice gun to shoot.

Start shooting at 800 meters and you will quickly notice the difference.

> I do not, however, know whether to get the service grade, premium grade or collector grade.

Depends upon what you are doing with the weapon.  Are you  sitting around looking at it, enjoying watching it gain value as it ages?  Are you out shooting with it at the range?  Are you taking it hunting?

> They fire 8mm ammunition (7.92x57mm Mauser). No choice there, no problem. On the M63, there is a caliber option: 8mm (7.92x57mm Mauser), .30-06 Springfield, .308 Winchester, .270 Winchester, or .243 Winchester.

Again, depends upon what you are doing.  I like the .308 because it is a nice middle of the road round.  If you are mainly doing bench rest at short ranges I would go with the .243.

I like the .308 because it's a cheap and effective NATO
round, what this means to me is that they're available
everywhere and if there's ever an instance where bullets are
at a premium you just shoot a UN peace keeper and take his ammo

I will be using the rifles mainly for target practice. But I don't mind a hot load for targets (like the .30-06 or .308). I do plan on eventually using them for hunting too, probably deer. I've thought about going boar hunting, but I don't think these would be quite appropriate for game like boar. They definitely will not just be shelf guns. So the higher quality probably isn't necessary.

They will also be used to kill fascists who try to take my guns because I resist the UN and the NWO :tinfoil: (that's really what this is all about, "when the shit goes down, you betta be ready!"). Which would you recommend for killing traitors, fascists, and other foes of Freedom?

I suppose that the .308 might be a good choice when the fascists call in the UN to restore order to us uprising Americans, and like Prisoner pointed out, I can just steal their NATO rounds and use them against them! Muahaha!

On the other hand, if the Russians invade you'll want a 7.62.

Just in case you have to take it into the hills and resist w/ your band of Wolverines...

Yeah that's the plan. I'm a little less afraid of Russia (at least for the moment) than I am of people from our own government. Look what happened in New Orleans after Katrina. With the declared state of emergency, they made gun owners give up their guns! They couldn't defend themselves against looters! WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT?!

"You can have my gun, when you pry it from my Colt dead hands"

get the .308, it will probably be cheaper if you buy bulk surplus ammo for target/fun. .308 is good for deer and boar, but 30 06 is good for deer and would be only a little more expensive for bulk ammo i think. What do you shoot know?
