Medical Marijuana Endorsed by Thousands of U.S. Doctors.

The second-largest group of doctors in the United States has approved Friday the use of marijuana for medical purposes, issuing a policy statement on medical marijuana this week.
The American College of Physicians, with 124,000 members, asked the U.S. government to cancel the ban on using marijuana for treating some patients or for medical experiments, stating that the research found that the non-smoked forms of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), (the main psychoactive element in marijuana), have been efficient in treating weight loss caused by AIDS, and nausea and vomiting pursuant to chemotherapy in cancer patients.
The doctors group urges the federal government to legalize marijuana and exclude it from the so called Schedule I, a drug category also containing illegal drugs such as heroin and LSD. Moreover, the ACP calls for protection of both doctors and patients from criminal and civil penalties in the states where medical marijuana laws have been adopted, the Los Angeles Times informs. A dozen states have already adopted laws which allow the use of marijuana as medicine.
The ACP also advises the government to ease the approval process of research on marijuana, which could lead to more accurate data related to the therapeutic value of the plant.
“Additional research is needed to clarify marijuana's therapeutic properties and determine standard and optimal doses and routes of delivery. Unfortunately, research expansion has been hindered by a complicated federal approval process, limited availability of research-grade marijuana and the debate over legalization,” the Philadelphia-based doctors group aid.
The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy seemed to be unimpressed by the findings. David Murray, chief scientist said: “This is not medical science. This is a policy paper. A political act calling for political response.”
Murray stated that medical organizations, such as the American Medical Association, the National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society are against using marijuana as medicine. The White House’s Office of National Drug Control Policy said the FDA should decide whether or not to issue approval of marijuana as medicine.

If the FDA should regulate MM then why do we need the White House’s Office of National Drug Control Policy. Don't we already have the DEA and MDMA(hehe).

Even more sad, anyone who tells their kids about this kind of backwards bullshit is probably a candidate for child abuse charges. I guess I'll have to tell my kids this part too (hopefully I can help resolve this before I have any).
You know what's going to be fun? When I'm old and a weed ad comes on TV late at night saluting ME (the retired outlaw) on Legalization Day for fighting to make weed legal (again) for people to enjoy.

They are probably just too lazy to legalize it because then they would have to make laws about driving under the influence and shit. Even though, most of the people I hang out with at least, can drive while high, its still going to have to be something they would not allow.

They wont legalize because they won't reap the profits... It's too easy to grow. If 1 out of every 50 pot smokers put forth a half decent effort, he could supply the other 49.
It's different than alcohol and cigarettes... Within a few years, there would be high end growhouses on every corner.

however, if they lowered the prices to more reasonable levels then it wouldn't be worth it to grow your own.
When it's $400/ ounce it's absolutley worth the investment to set up your own little homegrow. But if you could go to the store and but a pack of joints for $5 it wouldn't really be economically feasible for most people to spend $1000 on a nice basement grow.

Could be... but I know alot of homebrewers who make beer WAY better than commercial. Your example is like comparing a can of Budweiser to a fine homebrewed lager. And weed is easier to "make" than beer.
I can't imagine a 5$ pack of joints will compare to legally homegrown bud. Look how insanely good it is now, and it's illegal!

They could just regulate it like they do alcohol.
Yeah you can make your own at home, but the second you try reaping a profit, you could have the government at your door.
And the way they have different brands of alcohol at different qualities and prices, they would have FDA approved grow houses competing with each other over price and quality.

... and it will reduce profits of the alcohol, tobacco, and pharmaceutical industries. Absolutely correct, it is all about money.
> that makes the 2 largest doctors gropes that want it legal.
Until you remember that the pharmaceutical companies own the FDA.

see..its not different form cigarettes
tobacoo is easily grown, and many tobacoo farmers even plant in weed plants in the middle of there crops..that go completely undetected
soo whats to stop people from growing there own tobacoo crops?
also....if marijuana did become legal..i think it would just adopt the same laws put on alcohol
reading this was good news and bad news....and also mental retardation news

It's only illegal if they say no. I'm guessing these doctors have very big hands.

This is a good step though to getting pot legal, or at least legal for medical purposes. It's good to see that 124,000 doctors are behind this, I think it will have actual affect on the legal status of marijuana!
Yeah, it is lame that the white house group and FDA rejected it almost instantly, but still this is a great thing that the American College of Physicians is actually doing something about this issue! This is good news!
