Learning how to produce music
    #8049139 - 02/20/08 08:44 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

Anyone know any good online guides or books on how to learn Cubase and music production/terminology?

What is your favorite program to produce electronic music with?

So far I have an M-audio ozone midi keyboard and Cubase SX3, and am dying to learn!

We get a lot of these sorts of post in hear. Use the search function, a lot of great knowledge on the subject of starting off.

I always say start with fruity loops, unless your involving lots of live sound, in which case, stick with cubase.

I know Fruity gets pegged as an armature program, but that comes from the same people who believe certain programs make better music then others...and real musicians use macs. It's all complete bullshit. A lot of people have little more than windows recording program and a 10$...and make some unbelievable stuff.

Fruity is a damn powerful program if you want it to be. The great thing about it is you get pretty quick results and you learn about a lot of terms that will help you pick up Cubase quicker (or what ever DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) you choose to use.)

Once you learn fruity, you can move up to cubase and open fruity inside of it. Cubase is simply the shell, the working environment that can open up all sorts of applications in and combine them to make some epic shit.

The best way to learn is to just start making tracks. You learn as you go. Use the help function and read the manual...all of it. A great starting point is 'Digital Audio' by: Peter Kern. Well written and dosen't drag at all.

When you learn all the ins and outs, you learn efficiency. Efficiency with your tracks and getting the desired effects. YOu also save a lot of your own time and learn quicker, thus, advancing faster.

Good luck, there is a wealth of knowledge to be had on here and other music boards. Don't be afraid to use google (or the shroomery search function.)

Good Luck!

I am interested in learning as well. I have Acid Pro, Reason 4, and FL7 and I have no clue where to start. I probably will with FL.

Fruity loops for starters, then move to Cubase. I have been using it for over 5 years now.

I started on modplug tracker and then to reason just messing around really. 2 years ago I moved to logic 5.5 on PC, loads of VSTs, midi controller, monitors. I then moved to cubase 2 in the summer but after all of that i've decided my computer is too shit for making music so i'm saving for a mac and logic 8!

However, I did learn a lot and it was primarily from www.dogsonacid.com . 'The Grid' forum is dedicated to production techniques, q's, etc. Through browsing that forum you'll find out how to's of sound design, beats, sampling, modulation, sequencer tutorials, a fuckload of samples and loads of other stuff. Even though it's a 'dnb' production forum the stuff you'll learn is extremely valuable in whatever you want to make.

gluck!

you should just learn the basics of music especially making electronic music. Figure out the actions and basics of envelopes and gain structure... etc.. things will just make more sense once you start playing around with things. My advice, get reason4 and print out the manual , and read it from front to back. Its production basics 101 pretty much.

I used to play around with reason 3 alot, and made some pretty shitty but descent sounding ambient music. Only got about 1/4 way through the manual though.

Yea I like the way Reason 4 is set up so far. I downloaded some video tutorials from Propellerhead. Got a link for the manual snoot?

Also, should I get a MIDI keyboard like an M-Audio Oxygen 49 or something?

Keyboard helps tons, I have a M-audio Radium 49. It makes everything go quicker and seem more natural.

Reason has been my least favorite so far, but that was mostly based on GUI.

Yea I really have no exp with Reason but I know Andre3000 makes his beats using reason 4. I am most interested in making hip-hop style beats.

Do you think learning reason is a good way to get the general gist of all the other production programs?

I find the manual for reason is ALOT easier to understand than cubases...

Where did you find the manual for Reason? Torrent? Or did you own it?

That's because cubase is a real DAW, unlike Reason.
Anything you can do with reason you can do better with any other DAW and an appropriate plug-in.

yeh reason isn't DAW, its a a rack of tool's for making noise. But you can rewire it simply with DAW. You should have the manual in the doc folder of the reason folder. How can you not like the reason GUI? how's it any different then anything else?
