Will McCain get Swift boated?
    #8049107 - 02/20/08 08:36 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

Just a prediction on my behalf......as the candidates have all but thinned out......the dirty shit will begin to fly.

Do you think McCain's perspective opponent will use previous vets of dissenting political opinion, to drudge up some questions about his service.....or will they not touch it with a ten foot pole?

Place your bets.

Have you been watching the news or taken a look at a Political blog in the last 2 hours?

McCain is getting his ass handed to him with a scandal involving having sex with a female lobbyist he was doing legislative favors for.

Not sure how much damage it will cause or what will come of it, but, it's spreading like wild fire all over the MSM right now. Front page news of MSNBC, NYT and the Drudge Report right now.

Well, I just became aware of a battalion in Texas using their off duty time to protest against the war and McCain. These are people who have already served a couple of tours over there. Not sure if that movement of off duty soldiers will grow or what it may turn into or if it will get any MSM press.

Obama would be stupid to question his service. Not only was McCain a service member, but he was a POW.

From what I have seen so far McCain is just another George Bush. I dont see much difference between the two.

I see the democrats winning simply because of higher party voter turnout. Them democrat voters have been flocking to the polls this year.

You mean this stuff, about he he was actually held at a nice place on the beach and was given two Prostitutes because his dad was an Admiral?

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1964129/posts

I know there is stuff out there saying he actually couldn't pass mustard to deserve his promotions and that his father and Grandfather pulled strings for him to move him up the ladder. Not sure how it can be proven though.

There's stuff in an Old Times Magazine with an interview from McCain after his release where he said by day 4, he caved and gave away Missions information to the enemy so he could get some medicle treatment for his broken knee.

That link above says that there are more mistress McCain has to be exposed as well.

Will McCain get Swift boated?

It is already happening.

Just today on this very forum someone posted something they scraped out from the bottom of a septic tank and pasted here saying McCain was a traitor..blah blah blah in Vietnam.

I traced the source back to a scribbling penned by some nobody who once wrote a letter to a small town newspaper. But that will not stop some people from smearing that shit everywhere like it is news.

Who cares about checking sources in the Internet Age?

Just copy and paste any old thing. It is not the poster's responsibility to back their own claims.

But I think you are referring more to the MSM. Yes, I would not be totally surprised if some gas bubbles up from the swamp into the MSM at some point. It really depends upon McCain's opponent in the general election. If it's Obama, no. If it's Hillary, the Clintons will do almost anything to win an election.

Not only will some people touch that crap, they will actually dive deep down into it, gleefully swallow a load of it and regurgitate it here like they scored a touchdown.

Exactly. McCain and Obama have already started taking shots at each other, and Obama essentially says "I respect and admire McCain for the great service has has given to this country", etc. etc. etc., and then follows it up with sharp criticism of McCain's continuation of Bush's failed economic policies and foreign policy.

Obama won't have to touch his service, all he has to do is portray him as another Bush, something easily accomplishable and with great effect on the American people.

Getting his ass handed to him? Hardly. The New York TImes is instead beclowning itself (as usual) for showing such partisanship as to even print this smear. There's not even a tiny shred of substance to it.

from http://www.captainsquartersblog.com/mt/archives/017051.php

Quote:

Slimes At The Times

The New York Times launches its long-awaited smear of John McCain today, and the most impressive aspect of the smear is just how baseless it is. They basically emulate Page Six at the Post, but add in a rehash of a well-known scandal from twenty years ago to pad it out and make it look more impressive. In the end, they present absolutely no evidence of wrongdoing -- only innuendo denied by all of the principals:

Quote:

Early in Senator John McCain’s first run for the White House eight years ago, waves of anxiety swept through his small circle of advisers.

A female lobbyist had been turning up with him at fund-raisers, visiting his offices and accompanying him on a client’s corporate jet. Convinced the relationship had become romantic, some of his top advisers intervened to protect the candidate from himself — instructing staff members to block the woman’s access, privately warning her away and repeatedly confronting him, several people involved in the campaign said on the condition of anonymity.

When news organizations reported that Mr. McCain had written letters to government regulators on behalf of the lobbyist’s client, the former campaign associates said, some aides feared for a time that attention would fall on her involvement.

Mr. McCain, 71, and the lobbyist, Vicki Iseman, 40, both say they never had a romantic relationship. But to his advisers, even the appearance of a close bond with a lobbyist whose clients often had business before the Senate committee Mr. McCain led threatened the story of redemption and rectitude that defined his political identity.

It had been just a decade since an official favor for a friend with regulatory problems had nearly ended Mr. McCain’s political career by ensnaring him in the Keating Five scandal. In the years that followed, he reinvented himself as the scourge of special interests, a crusader for stricter ethics and campaign finance rules, a man of honor chastened by a brush with shame.

Got that? Nothing actually happened. The big story here is that there may have been an "appearance" of a "close bond".

And where did the Times get this information? Well, you have to read past the rehash of the Keating Five scandal of the mid-1980s, past a strange accusation involving McCain's use of direct flights from Washington to Phoenix, and past his crusade to clean up Washington through the BCRA (which I adamantly opposed and still do) to get to the Slimes' sourcing. It turns out that they talked to two anonymous former staffers -- neither of whom allege that the relationship actually became romantic -- and who describe themselves as disgruntled.

Great sourcing there, guys. Way to corroborate a non-story. I guess Lucy Ramirez must have been hard to find this time around.

No, I don't think so. The DNC is not in a position to try and paint McCain's belly yellow the way (ironically) Bush's smear team did in 2004 to Kerry. If they tried to, it would be a mistake and would not stick. It will be 1 million years before voters stop assuming Republican politicians are tough soldier dudes. Trying to attack this associtian in the persona of McCain, who was a tortured POW, with Bill Clinton's wife or a newbie senator pulling the trigger? The DNC may be made up of idiots but they are better strategists than that. IMO.

Phred,

Fact is, the media launched a smear campaign on him last night, implying in the minds of people, he was having an affair with a lobbyists and doing special legislative favors for her. The later had more emphasis.

I wouldn't call what is happening to him a good thing for him right now.

Weather it sticks or not, perceptual damage has been done.

Same thing happened to RP with that News Letter. No direct evidence to those being his words, slipping through with him as editor or his knowledge, no evidence of his ever verbally uttering a racist word, no evidence of his trying to form Racially biased policy in Congress, yet, a huge chunk of America now believes RP is a racists and would establish racist policies.

You even tried to make shit stick to him via assumptions.

You know how media smears work and how the public against a candidate help them along.

Who knows where this will end up, true or not.

I think it's weaksauce even if it were to be true, considering everyone already knows he cheated on his first wife and knows he was involved with the "special favors" Keating 5 scandal and the party didn't care and have made him thier front runner for the nomination.

It's still all over the news today. The heat is on him right now, true or not.

That is all.

Is it actually being proposed that it was an affair? I never really even saw that in the article, just speculation that it could have been romantic, but I thought the real issue was that she was a lobbyist who was hanging around the campaign and that he had pushed for measures that the businesses she represented were seeking, and this is further evidenced by the way they tied it in with his past issues with getting tangled up with lobbyists and special interests.

I didn't see it as a sex scandal. I did see McCain as a hypocrite, and I don't buy the notion that he just happens to keep bumbling himself into these situations unaware.

Is bumbling even a word?

I don't care who politicians have sex with as long as it isn't with minors. The right wing Christians/Family values voters do.

They are Huck supporters so it wouldn't hurt McCain if it were true.

I care about Policy making that may restrict my personal freedoms and take money out of my bank accounts.

Since when are "special legislative favors" a crime in Washington DC? That's what our Political system currently runs on for Pete's sake. If they are going to go after McCain for that, they might as well go after all members of the house and Senate.

The only thing they could have on him, IF they were able to prove any of it true, is that, he reneged on his promise to clean up his personal ethics.

We'll have a better idea of what level of perceptual damage was done anyway in the Texas and Ohio primaries.

Funny joke!!!
