I just got offered a full ride for my master's degree at a university there and I am wondering if any of you guys and gals have ever lived there or visited.
I'm going to be visiting there next month, so if you have any recommendations of things to see, I would appreciate it.

I'm originally from MI (currently living in Texas), so it'll take a little bit of getting used to, but I'm sure I'm get used to it again. It is damn cold, though.

I was born at fort ben and grew up in Indy. Its a good city as far as city's go. Lots to do, sports, clubs, schools, the Indy500 and Brickyard. But its also a violent city, you have to watch your backside real close. There are lots of things to see, start down town at the circle, it has a war museum inside it and you can go up to the top and get a great view of the city. There must be 4 or 5 great museums down town. Then thers the sports thing, if you love sports Indy has it all, Nascar, NFL, NHL, NBA, Baseball you can go to some kind of a game about any night. The state has became rather lax on pot as well, you can still get busted but there not looking and for 10 pounds the max is 18 months. so small amounts are a slap on the wrist and ticket. My cousin got busted last year and had to pay a 150 dollar fine. All in all its a good town to visit but I wouldn't plan on staying, I'm from there and being from there is way better than living there.

If you don't mind, which university?
I believe my sister's boyfriend is going to IUPUI for law school. I never would have thought that IUPUI would be a decent place to go, but apparently it is .
Indy is a decently sized city, nothing too extravagant. The traffic isn't too bad (at least from what I've seen). They have a nice international airport just to the west of the city. That will probably come in handy sooner or later. On second though, I really don't know too much about the city, I've just been there a LOT. Maybe it would be better if you had more specific questions?
Good luck with your endeavors, Redstorm.

Indy is alright. Easy to get around I guess. Most of my extended family lives there, mainly around the broadripple area which is a kinda upscale area with a touristy block or two of shops/bars/etc.

i've heard it's a pretty sucky place overall redstorm, but i've never been and don't really know for sure. to me it looks like just another boring, uninspired, run of the mill mid-west city.
if you're going to get a full ride you should do it though. that's a good opportunity. plus, living in a shit hole for awhile is good for you. it really puts things in perspective and reinforces you attitudes of what sort of places you like and don't like, and what you desire for your future, although i'm sure you already know you don't want to live in indianapolis for the rest of your life.
i would cash that check for sure.

I went to school in Indy for about seven years on the north side right near Broadripple. Love it there. Good bars, some smaller brewpubs if you're into that sort of thigs, some pretty tasty food.
I don't care much for Indy in general though. Pretty blah as cities go, but they do have some killer museums. The Monon (sp?) trail is pretty sweet... really long bike/walking trail that runs a good ways through the city and crosses over the White River.
Also, no beer on Sundays here in Indiana.
If Butler's where you're going, congrats and I'd definitely take it. The atmosphere is a little upscale, but a buddy of mine goes up there and he likes it well enough.
Best of luck to you RS.

Yeah, I've lived pretty near Indianapolis for my entire life. True there are a lot of sports to attend, some good comedy clubs but other than that it doesn't have much that appeals to me except for my family. The weather is always crazy. It can go from one extreme to the next from day to day, and many times within the same day. Most of the people are assholes, but that is probably true about most places. Depending on what part of the city you are in, it can be pretty ghetto and dangerous. Summers get to the low 90's with humidity that makes it feel well over 100 and the winters get to single digits with wind chill that feels well below zero. WE don't really get much snow anymore though.

Thank you all for the input.
I'm really just looking for somewhere that's relatively chill, doesn't have a whole lot of traffic, and the cost of living is low. I live in Houston now and the traffic and business of everything is just too much.
Also, I'm Midwestern at heart anyways, so I don't view Midwestern things are being not good.

It's relatively cheap to live here, especially in certain parts of the city. Obviously the nicer areas are more expensive but if you don't mind living in the rough areas, it is very cost effective. The traffic is never that bad. Mild rush hours in the morning and evening but nothing in comparison to a Chicago rush hour. Everyone here though thinks that they are Jeff Gordon so they drive around like fucking idiots.

that sounds about right. the term Hoosier, (any awkward, unsophisticated person, esp. a rustic), really defines the majority of people in Indiana. the number of close-minded bigots is astronomical and all the cool people leave town as soon as they get the chance.
some of the architecture downtown is decent and theyre working on improving the overall feel of the indianapolis. if youre into parkour, theres some fun to be had.
besides local talent, the music scene is ok. with venues like the mousetrap and the music mill playing jam bands almost every weekend, i always have something to do.
bars are bars. the closer to the colleges you get, the better the eye candy and if swarms of frat boys immersed in faggotry dont bother you, you might have fun.
lots of small suburbs have exploded into giant, thriving malls in the past 5-10 years, if you like to shop.
i, personally, havent seen ANY violence in the streets. there are few shootings on the news, but usually isolated incidents.
the weed varies from booty,$20oz, to ok chronic,$50 1/8.
the psychs are soon to be plentiful

Majority of the people in Indiana are not how you describe them man. There may be a LARGE number of people that are how you describe them but not MOST. Are you yourself not an awkward and unsophisticated person?

I've lived in Indiana for about 4 years now. I actually live in Bloomington, where the IU campus is located. The state has a real natural midwest beauty, especially B-town (tree city). Nature preserves all over the place. Northern Indiana, especially North West indiana is more Industrial with dirty ol' smoke stacks and such. That includes Indy. When i drive in from the south from b-town i always recognize Indy by the gross smoke stacks and other urban pollutions.
