Thank you all for the input.
I'm really just looking for somewhere that's relatively chill, doesn't have a whole lot of traffic, and the cost of living is low. I live in Houston now and the traffic and business of everything is just too much.
Also, I'm Midwestern at heart anyways, so I don't view Midwestern things are being not good.

It's relatively cheap to live here, especially in certain parts of the city. Obviously the nicer areas are more expensive but if you don't mind living in the rough areas, it is very cost effective. The traffic is never that bad. Mild rush hours in the morning and evening but nothing in comparison to a Chicago rush hour. Everyone here though thinks that they are Jeff Gordon so they drive around like fucking idiots.

I'm going to be able to afford about a grand between rent and utilities a month. Would I be able to get something pretty nice for that amount?

that sounds about right. the term Hoosier, (any awkward, unsophisticated person, esp. a rustic), really defines the majority of people in Indiana. the number of close-minded bigots is astronomical and all the cool people leave town as soon as they get the chance.
some of the architecture downtown is decent and theyre working on improving the overall feel of the indianapolis. if youre into parkour, theres some fun to be had.
besides local talent, the music scene is ok. with venues like the mousetrap and the music mill playing jam bands almost every weekend, i always have something to do.
bars are bars. the closer to the colleges you get, the better the eye candy and if swarms of frat boys immersed in faggotry dont bother you, you might have fun.
lots of small suburbs have exploded into giant, thriving malls in the past 5-10 years, if you like to shop.
i, personally, havent seen ANY violence in the streets. there are few shootings on the news, but usually isolated incidents.
the weed varies from booty,$20oz, to ok chronic,$50 1/8.
the psychs are soon to be plentiful
ummm, what are you into?

Majority of the people in Indiana are not how you describe them man. There may be a LARGE number of people that are how you describe them but not MOST. Are you yourself not an awkward and unsophisticated person?

I've lived in Indiana for about 4 years now. I actually live in Bloomington, where the IU campus is located. The state has a real natural midwest beauty, especially B-town (tree city). Nature preserves all over the place. Northern Indiana, especially North West indiana is more Industrial with dirty ol' smoke stacks and such. That includes Indy. When i drive in from the south from b-town i always recognize Indy by the gross smoke stacks and other urban pollutions.
