idea for a Cooler FC
    #8048634 - 02/20/08 06:53 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

I thought of this one a while back and I want your input on the idea. Tell me if you think it will work well, badly or not at all. Also some improvements would be appreciated.

I am going to buy a big cooler like the kind that keeps food cold with some ice bags. the cooler has a void of air in between 2 layers of plastic, thats how they insulate your sandwiches and soda from the hot air. I will drill a hole near the top of the body (not the lid). I will then fill the void with water until it reaches 1 inch under the whole. I will then drop an aquarium heater into the hole and plug it in to the wall. I will also have a reptile cage's thermometer and humidity detector in the FC.

any thoughts?

the same thing can be done with 2 tubs. one in the other, water up to the side of the inner tub, heater in the tub. probably better results this way as the cooler will be thicker than the tubs equaling less heat = harder to reach optimum levels. This may even be cheaper, and remember coolers were meant to cool. but one will not know until one tries it. if you already have the cooler give it a shot. it would be interesting to see what comes of it. :mushroom2:

seems like it would cut down a lot on fresh air exchange...
are you going to cut holes in the sides of the cooler?

A lot of coolers actual have foam or honeycomb filled spaces not an air space. It is injected into the cooler after the two halves are joined. Not all coolers are have a insulating foam though.
Still 2 tubs would be much easier.

I'll cut 4 or so holes in the lid and stuff with polyfill for ventilation.

A cooler is more available for me and I can get one cheap at a store down the street (I can't drive right now). If I get the cheapest possible cooler, do you think it won't have foam in it? If the sides bend a bit, it probably wont have foam either.

when the heater is on it may melt the cooler plastic make a hole and drain the thing then burn your house down..
not sure though.

If its safe for storage containers, it should be safer for the thicker plastic cooler, unless the plastics are different...

doubt that though.

Safe for glass aquariums.
Plastic I doubt. I made a heat bomb for a styro incubator out of a plastic bottle but I had the heater sitting in a shot glass so it didn't touch plastic.
Just be careful, those things go from innocent aquarium heater to smoking hole in your carpet in about 5 seconds when they get out of water.(broke an aquarium once)

didn't know it was that dangerous. maybe I'll put it in a test tube or, better yet, skip a lot of parts and not cut a hole at all. I'll just put the thermometer in a big coffee mug with water in the cooler. that will take care of the humidity and the heat.

A big ass glass mason jar works too. Remember the smaller it is the closer you have to watch it. If the water evaporates the heater will crack and short out. You'd be topping your coffee mug up every 12 hours. More water means more thermal mass too...it will keep the heater from cycling on and off too quickly and wearing it out.

i guarantee you that two tubs would probably cost the same as the cooler youre looking into. sounds like a shit ton of work to do too. high risk as well. two tubs go for the outragous price of $14, side mounted heater with a peice to keep it off the sides $12. if you can get a ride to wally world it would be far easier, less risky with far better results.

My thoughts...

So you are creating a fruiting chamber, not an incubator correct? Don't waste your time either way. The fruiting chamber does not need to be heated. At all. Nor do you have to incubate at any point in the fungal life cycle (if you want to incubate thats fine, just more hastle ime).

If that reptile thermometer/hygrometer is digital, its pretty much useless. An analog hygrometer is what you would need to monitor humidity accurately. You do not need to monitor the temps, and perlite/misting will take care of the RH.

My vote: Incubate at room temperature. Make a monotub/ double tub, or other tried, tested and true FC. Take the cooler and fill with some rye bread, havarti, swiss, brie, cold cuts, condiments, brewskies and ice. Go picnicking. Don't drill into the cooler.

It is going to serve as both. since the room it's going to be in is at around 40 degrees fahrenheit, I don't think its a good idea. I keep my bedroom at 50 degrees, so that won't work either.

both thermometer/hygrometer are analog.

There is a store that sells shit for nearly nothing near my house called Ocean State Job Lot. a cooler will only run me about 10-15 doll hairs.

I'll just do the microwaved, tupperware filled with brf/verm. It should work OK. I'll use a big pot and water if I am able to.

yes, its very similar the the TIT thing. the cooler is just easier because its made to trap heat and be airtight. All I need to do is find some polyfill.

I'm going to cut holes and fill with polyfill on the lid. that will keep semi sterile environment.
