HP Pavilion zx5000 --Defective Power Jacks--**UPDATED!!**

Help me out please.
I bought the laptop back in 05' and a year later, no JUST over a year later and thus after the warrenty ran out, my power jack let loose rendering the computer useless.
I called HP and they said that I could send $250 to have it repaired. Didn't like that idea. I contacted a local guy who told me that he could repair it but couldn't guarantee that it would last.
Fast forward to a couple weeks ago-
I recieved a Class Action Lawsuit paper (POWER PLUG & GRAPHIC CARD SETTLEMENT) regarding this issue. Unfortunatly, I wasn't able to mail in my paper before the "due date" and am now wondering what I can/should do about this.
It was an $1100 laptop that is now a giant paperweight and I'm starting to get pissed off about it again, especially after receiving the Lawsuit papers a bit too late.
Any input about this is greatly appreciated.
*****UPDATE*****
Just checked out the website and noticed that they have a new due date of April, 4, 2008

Reread the class action. There are multiple dates regarding what you plan to do. I think you have until April to respond. (Assuming that you are part of the same class action.)
If it is the same one that I am involved in, then the date was to opt out, not opt in.

good for the lawyers
these fuckers make a product guarenteed to be destroyed by useing it as intended (i.e. taking it with you day to day). The only way I can keep my dell from fucking up is to just use it as a desktop, and not unplug the cord.
This whole thing is stupid. They need a device that holds the power plug that is seperate from teh fucking motherboard. A 5$ piece could do it, then have wires running to the board.
Seuss said some manufacturers do this now... hopefully more will. I'll never buy a laptop again without something like this, or a kickass warranty.

Yes the old date was Feb, 8th Now they moved it to the 4th of April.
Is your issue also with the Power Jack, or the GC?

No kidding...a modern peice of machinery with all the "high tech stuff", and they F*ck up a 5 part...
On top of this I had innitially purchased another $35 dollar power cable thinking that was the problem. Really a stupid waste of everything...time, money, resorces.
I just hope the lawsuit is successful and done in a relativly timely manner.

Both. I have several claims against HP for multiple laptops (nx9500 series and r3000 series). The graphics chip issue is the big one for me.
The object/exclude/appear choices have to be postmarked by Feb 25, 2008. The file a claim option has to be postmarked by April 4, 2008. If you do nothing, you get nothing.
Proposed settlement provides:
1) free repair, including round trip shipping and handling costs and a limited warranty on the repair
2) reimbursement of up to $650 for related repairs that you have already paid for
3) a coupon for future purchases of HP products (yeah right)

hey...can anyone tell me if this applies if you bought it from a friend. I bought a zx5000 from a friend who bought it originally and the jack is all messed up. I also started having trouble with the DVD/CD drive.

look at the settlement!
Almost certainly, yes, it will apply.
Usually the class is the owners, not hte original buyers. Read the settlement and figure out if you need to take any action to preserve your rights if your not a part of the class that settled. Probably you won't need to, as they can't really settle with someone who's not represented in the class, but what do I know?
Then you can try and get them to settle with you individually, or you can try and find a lawyer yourself, or simply sue them and use the evidence obtained in the original action, if public, for yourself.
good luck
BUT- Make sure you opt in or whatever its called. You prolly won't get a notice if they have no way of knowing you were the new owner, so you may have to take some action to register. Or maybe you don't, and the laptop is automatically covered, either way, READ THE SETTLEMENT!

It's a go.
I was sent a box via Fed Ex with packaging for my laptop and a Fed Ex sticker to ship to HP for free repair.
Haven't shipped it out yet, but should go well.

Got it back in about 5 days from day of shipping.
The paper I sent in asked to provide a password so that they could keep the information on the HD otherwise they would re-set it to factory conditions.
I didn't emember my password and wrote down just that. To my suprise they fixed it up and left my files intact. I got some irreplacable pictures along with 100's of songs back! Yay!
