Of Ego, Learning and Competition

Just busted someone out in a Hold'em poker tournament. The flop came Ts Td 2h. I had nothing (Ad 9d) and tried a bluff against 2 players figuring if no one ha d a ten, both would fold. One folded and the other who flopped 3 tens merely called.
The turn came a fourth diamond for me. I put in a baby bet trying to see if he had a ten, a two or another pair. He called again. I got a fifth diamond on the river for an Ace-high flush. I put in another small bet to go fishing. He took the bait and put in a big raise. I reraised all-in and he called without even thinking.
"You are the worst player I have ever seen!" he cried.
We shall disregard the hyperbole of him not having evaluated every single player in the world. He had two chances to cash in his hand and was trying so hard to trap me that he trapped himself.
"Your play was terrible!" he lamented. When I asked which play, he replied, "You played the entire hand like shit."
I stacked up his $6000 donation in tourney chips and smiled.
What is the point of this story? Is it just another opportunity to boast? Maybe, but the point is: he never even considered the possibility that he misplayed or was outplayed. He was already counting his money when he hit the flop and that was that.
His whining precluded ANY POSSIBILITY OF LEARNING from the experience.

OC:
Quote:

OTHER DUDE:
Quote:
"You are the worst player I have ever seen!"
The resemblance between the two statements is striking if you ask me.

How do you have any way of being sure that his whining made him unable to learn anything?

I agree that it is not a certainty, but it is a general observation that emotionalism clouds judgement.

Yes, it does and of course it is more preferable to keep a lucid mind regardless the situation. But some times it doesn't happen this way. And for some people it hardly happens. But each time someone experiences deep moments of emotional vulnerability, an aspect that needs to be improved is being revealed and can create a lot of insight. And it is from that insight that we grow. I don't think that any of us just happen to be emotionally infallible. We achieve that through fear and weakness. So in a way, you can say that whining can teach one a lot. I know that I always learn something about myself each time I do so, and as opposed to what I once did, I am not feeling awkward about those moments anymore. I prefer to stay open and see what's really happening, some times it can even turn amusing.
