How far through it are you? I just finished 4 years of Uni. and left myself with a hefty debt, a lot of people i know from high school are stuck in crap jobs but have no debt ... so as of right now i wish i never went through with it but probably in the long run it's a good decision to stick with it so you can do something you enjoy and ultimately make good money. I'll appreciate it more once i start seeing the benefit of it.

You can do whatever you want, but get that degree. You'll get tired of bumming around eventually and be pissed that you dropped out.

Well if yer into the arts and crafts and music, college really isn't necessary--just because you have a piece of paper that says you can play music, or paint purty colours, doesn't mean it is good. That kind of shit is pretty damn subjective. Tell Stevie Ray Vaughn or Hendrix they should've took lessons? I don't think so.
As for Surgeons, optometrists, science in general college is a neccessity. Unlike art, whether the doctor fucked up or not is pretty obvious. So I'd stick with college when going into professions that deal with other people at a crucial level.
College wasn't for me dude. I'm a starving artist, and happy. All the information I could ever want about my crafts (Art, Music, Humour) is basically free.
So I'd say it depends on a combination on your route to happiness and what you want to become.

yeah - a degree in arts or music sounds like fun, but seems pretty worthless. Might as well be a communications major

I completely agree, just don't go for a degree where you can't get a job out of school unless you go back for another 3-4 years like me ... bad decision on my part but oh well ...

Stay in school man, it is hard enough for grads to find jobs, let alone drop outs. Its not like its a 10 year thing. Just do it. If you drop out, you will probably regret it later. Unless you are in school for the arts Just stay.

What are you taking if you don't mind me asking? i mean it's not like it's very hard, you just have to work for it ... you'll end up trying just as hard to find a job without a degree as you would towards GETTING your degree which in the long run will be a better thing!

If you are content giving up the money you have invested in your education up to this point, and you have a viable plan for the future, by all means go ahead and do it.

I matriculated three years in the University of California system and left after my second year in Santa Cruz (was a freshman in Santa Barbara). Not that I didn't love the place, I did, but a business opportunity presented itself and I figured I'd take a shot at starting my own retail website selling subwoofer speakers custom built and branded under my name. Fortunately, I had a working relationship with the company that would build my products before I actually left school, and had saved up about $10,000 in capital to use in order to finance my first purchase orders.
It has been an exciting and rewarding experience. And though I no longer live in beautiful Santa Cruz, it's been some four years now and my business has taken in over a quarter million dollars of sales. Not to say there haven't been roadblocks along the way! My producer in fact declared bankruptsy last December and I have about $25,000 worth of production awaiting delivery. They have since reopened a new shop, and having a personal relationship with me, committed to deliver on the products they owe... but in the meantime it has destroyed my inventory and left me with considerably less cash flow. On the upside, I saved up profits from the first three years in business and now am getting a handle on investing (see: Stock picks). I also late last year started to manage a few rental properties for an owner who moved out of state, as a result collecting 5% of the gross revenue each month.
While I am tootin' my own horn a bit (hey I've been sick for a week and I want something to feel good about! ), I'm also making a point that the future is unpredictable, and unless you have a better game plan and you are willing to work for it, you should stay in school as that was your original game plan to begin with. That said, I do not have a degree and I am very happy (but also quite lucky). I get to spend my days working from home, on my own hours, and typically spend half that time either on the Shroomery or playing my guitar. Your mileage may vary, so be cautious. Live for today, but prepare for the future.

That is how I feel. I mean, a lot of people with art degrees go on to do the aesthetics of magazine layouts, designing chairs, or deciding what color(s) your plastic cups will be. The everyday art that makes the world go round. I won't be able to have a job like that because I have no degree, but I could care less what color the cup is. "art"
Penn and Teller's series "Bullshit" has an episode on college, it is worth checking out, at least for tittie shots.
Having a degree is like making your "lightning rod that attracts success" a bit bigger; However it doesn't change the variability of the lightning itself: In otherwords success can hit any one, for any reason, under any defintion.
For instance, I'm successful because...

So I'd say it depends on a combination on your route to happiness and what you want to become.
so you're saying that you're on the same echelon as jimi hendrix and stevie ray vaughn?
And yes, you may think you are an artist and all it takes in the art world is a good product (which don't get me wrong, in the extreme of cases can be true, but more consistently it's not), but to really do well in the art world/industry, you need to have knowledge of art history, knowledge of how the art industry works, you need some guidance from some professors or other art buffs who have been around the block a time or two and can enlighten you on how the industry works.
you are being naive in your approach to the world. get that degree. i know what i am talking about because i was in the same boat as you. i know i wasn't designed for college either, and i wanted to drop out so many times, but holy crap, i am so happy i stayed in and finished. it felt like such a weight off my shoulders i can't even explain it. tough it out, grind it out, and just hold onto that hope that once you get out you'll be a better person for it, more knowledgeable and a handful of skill sets and connections that you would never have attained had you dropped out.
just my 2 cents.
EDIT: sorry this was meant for the original poster, not you Apoll.
