Inoculation and darkness
    #8046359 - 02/20/08 08:27 AM (16 years, 1 month ago)

when the rye grains are injected with spores should the jar be put away in a dark place the whole time the mycelium is growing or is it alright to expose to regular light. right now there in a cooler and have not been looked at or exposed to light in three weeks.

It's not necessary to not look at them for three weeks to avoid any contact with light.

By cooler I guess you mean a cooler in a warm place, don't ya?

It's completely OK to check out the myc growth of your jars.
Actually I'd say it's necessary to be able to see, weather there are any contams or not. It wouldn't be so funny to open your incubator and finding pure mold spores. You'd have to clean the cooler and so on.

As long as they are stalled in a dark environment and are not exposed to light too much it's all fine!

Ya I check mine 10x a day sometimes and they are fine, what kills em is when I try to speed it up and add too much heat or do surgery...lol...I was lucky with my current project cuz the 1st gen OakRidge batch is kicking ass....the myc is so thic and just consuming the substrate completely so there is no place for anything to grow. Between the active air technology and a new location I have been doing really well. They are fine wherever you leave em, just if the jars are too compact or are too big I have had em fruit invitro before it was totally colonized and had to birth em early but that is no big deal

I've been saying for many years that ambient room light has zero effect on colonizing mycelium, either good or bad. I can't imagine a reason why that horrible disinformation refuses to die. It defies rational thought. Fungi in the wild doesn't grow in total darkness, so why should it be necessary in our cultivation? In all my years, I've never noticed a cow looking for a spot in total darkness to drop its load.
