electric heating pad

instead of investing in a colonization tank and a new fish tank heater (lost mine), I just put the jars back into the pressure cooker with some water and h202. Then I put a small heating pad underneath it, put a shirt on top of it (for insulation) and now its sitting on the tile floor in my room. Does that sound like it should work?
Im concerned about keeping the heating pad running all day. I read theyre cheap on electricity, but can be a fire hazard. Anyone ever had one of these things catch on fire before, or know how much they cost to run 24/7?

Get the jars out of the PC. They'll contaminate in there from the dampness and stale air. Put your jars on a bookshelf and forget them. They'll do fine at room temperature. If you HAVE to heat them because your house is freezing, put the heating pad on top of the jars, not below. RR

I use a heating pad below my jars to keep them at a constant temperature. Why is it important to put the heating pad on top instead of on the bottom?

dude your better off just getting a small carboard box putting them in it and putting the box in your dresser of somewhere dark, and room temp will be fine nothing below like 60 degrees i think. u shouldn't need a heating pad unless your house is unheated

They'll do perfectly fine in room temp. But if your really into it, It'll work fine in the PC if you leave it dry with the heating pad. Heating pads like the ones used for reptile cages? You should try using something else instead of the PC (under a tub?).

heating pads are not made to have anything on top of them.
Make a heatbomb. Search that.

That couldn't be further from the truth. I have one under my Gecko tanks and that is where they belong. Not trying to flame you, just informing you. But i agree,a heatbomb is way more suited to this hobby .

Even though I have added h202 to the water in the pressure cooker there is still a risk of bacterial contamination?
I have also put a layer of plastic wrap atop each jar, just in case there is a bacterial presence, and periodically spray disinfectant into the pot when I open it. My room gets really cold, like 50-60f. the water is constantly at 80-85f with the setup i have now.
Is there any way to eliminate the risk of bacterial problems using this method?

Why would you want water in the incubator at all? That doesn't even make sense. You only need humidity during fruiting.

Water is not necessary? I thought that having water not only more evenly distributes and maintains heat in an incubation chamber, but also protects against a loss of moisture from the jars. Is this not accurate?

ok so what if, instead of water in the incubation chamber I add some type of insulating material to trap heat inside the pressure cooker? Then I am eliminating the source of humidity for any possible contaminants, but I am also allowing my jars to dry out...

No water will only contribute to contamination/bacteria...you don't want moisture if you've already given the jar its moisture level..Take the jars out and put them at room temperature....A mycologist would simply laugh at your dumb ass for even thinking that. Room temperature is sure as hell better then anything I've experienced.

Unless your house is freezing, your only going to goof up your jars trying to heat them. Using a reptile pad..you'll most likely kill off any growth. They will grow in a cold environment (to a point)...just slower.

It'll just have a higher chance of contamination...you don't want to sweat your jars as this fucks up the water content and water droplets forming on the bottom causing contaminants due to the form of gravity ...

I only worry about killing them because my reptile heaters actually get really hot...excess of 100degrees
