It won't hurt it, but be patient and let it fully colonize. You could also remove the uncolonized part and then case it. I've done it both ways and both worked great. Colonized substrate doesn't contaminate easily. Good luck on your grow.

If your going to break it up anyways. No it won't hurt but you want 100% colonization, Patience grasshoppa. To break it up use a sterilized cheese greater and spawn in layers for better inoculation points

ok well the thing is, it's a jar i did from dried spores i scraped from a dried cap go look at my thread second attempt. but it was a small black section on it like 1/4 the size of a penny and i don't wanna let it sit in there anymore cause that and it's gone way to far to just toss it. like i have 11 syringes im using next thursday between 12 pint,12 half pint, and a half gallon of rye grains so im not worried about anything like losing jars, just this 1 haha :]

To be more on the sterile side, dump the cakes into a bag and manipulate them into chunks from the outside. The smaller the better, More inoculation points, like dumbfounded1600 said.

What's the point of putting them in a zip lock and breaking it up...there still will be huge chunks...cheese greater or food processor a few button push/releases and it's all set.

Black mold? Toss it. It's bad.

No if it has black mold simply take it and bury it 6 inches deep into some soil that you know it'll grow in...come fruiting conditions it'll start to grow...DON'T TOSS it...keep the jars also!

Cut the black section out. Be sure to take plenty of the surrounding material with it. Dunk the colony in lukewarm or cold water overnight (held under water with something heavy). Then place the rest in a plastic kitchen bag of some sort. Break it up. Make sure it breaks down into individual grains. This doesn't need to be 100% broken down, just even particle size so it lays evenly in the tray. Buy a plastic tupperware bin with a lid that will hold ~2x the amount of colonized material you have. Place in a warm, humid enviroment. Wait, harvest. It's really pretty simple- just watch for contamination.

Theres no salvaging a black mold jar...even if you cut it out it'll just sporolate more it already has...take it out of your house and bury it outside....Not Worth The Risk Keeping It Inside and getting the rest of your jars contaminatied.
