stropharia in distress?
    #8014183 - 02/12/08 06:03 PM (16 years, 8 days ago)

Is it possible to save my trays?  Could I perhaps dunk?

I believe I am suffering overlay which is allowing moisture to collect on top and allowing contamination to "pool up". I am going to research into having hydrogen peroxide being in the water that the trays will be dunked in. I am going to pick all of what I believe are aborts and going to dunk and see where it goes from there.

I would greatly appreciate other insight. I have more jars prepped for injection so I could easily start over, but would love to enjoy my stropharia if i can save it.

I went ahead and dunked three of the trays I am using.  I will post up the progress after the dunking is complete.

you can vaguely see the cake submerged

again, you can vaguely see the two cakes, but the third one is not available

Did you test that spot with a q-tip to see if the color rubbed off? This is a way to see if your spot is bruising or contam. If the color comes off on the q-tip its a contam, if not it could just be bruising.

That said, if it is a contam, and you dunked it, your in bad shape. That green could be trich. spores, and when those things get out, its bad news.

Now, on the bright side, that spot did look like bruising, and your substrate did look dry. The only way to tell is wait, and see what happens. If that little blue/green spot starts looking grayish and fuzzy, you just spread trich. spores everywhere. If it starts going crazy fruiting, then you did well.

What made you decide to dunk mid flush anyway?

As a rule of thumb, you want to dunk 3-5 days after a flush, even if it seems really dry. The myc. works in cycles, you don't want to disrupt them. The 3-5 day wait is to allow it to follow its natural cycle before it fruits again. Its going to take that break anyway, if you wait to dunk it usually stimulates the second flush right as the myc. is getting ready.

:peace: and good luck!

I totally forgot that information, d4a2n0k, regarding waiting a few days before dunking. I remember reading threads that argued between the methods and that either way, a few days will be taken.

The pictures I have posted are actually cased; you are seeing the cased cake dry in those pictures, but the top has collections of moisture. The accumulation of moisture is more evident in the second picture.

I did not test the spot with a q-tip, but I simply tore away at the spots and then dunked. I will post the progress.

I appreciate the response!

The blue was bruising, but the green was probably trichoderma. Next time, don't try to cut it out as that usually spreads it worse. If you're close to harvest, you can pile up a salt paste on the mold to stop it from spreading long enough for the few days you need to harvest.

those were not there before...

I know it is too soon to start making assumptions regarding whether the garden will be fine or not.  The pictures I have displayed are of but one tray.  The other trays show signs of fruiting, but not as vigorous as the tray I have displayed.

Let's see how things go tomorrow.  All responses will be greatly appreciated.
