Stinky Coffee/Coir Incubation...

Hey fellaz,
Is a coffee/coir/gypsum substrate supposed to smell... unpleasant?
I've had a tub in incubation for about a week and it's coming along nicely but it smells a little nasty. Not sour or rotten. There are no visible molds or slimes. But it smells unfavorable either way. Not like it did when i first mixed it tho it wasn't the greatest fragrance when i made it either.
I figure it's that ass-smelling gypsum but I'd like some reassurance if anyone else deals with this smell with their substrate too.
Thanks fellaz!

Gypsum is mostly odorless, and it shouldn't stink. Don't incubate. Allow it to colonize at normal room temperature. High temps stimulate molds and bacteria in the uncolonized parts of your substrate, especially when coffee is used. RR

Then it sounds like i bought gypsum+additives ><
It definitely has a "not-so-good" smell straight from the bag. I forget the name brand but they called it "Garden Gypsum" and it was the only stuff i could find locally. It has small brown specks which i was curious about...
Thanks RR

if it's hoffman brand than it should work fine. mine has an odd smell to it strait from the bag in large amounts. but after you mix it with the coir and coffee it should for the most part only have an earthy coffee smell to it.

The stink covers up most of that earthiness =/
I suppose I'll keep with it and just keep an eye on it.
As far as i can gather smells don't mean failure 100% of the time unless it's sour or rotten. The stink i am getting almost smells like a poo-ish smell with some coffee thrown in and a hint of sweetness.
mmmm mmmm
