contamination ratio?
    #8040754 - 02/18/08 10:56 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

i had 34 fully colonized jars and out of all of them only one contam(green looking mold).. i tossed the jar and everything... i know that sterility=godly. i guess what I'm saying is that I'm half ass with the sterile thing. i don't burn the needles, because they are pre sterilized. and i don't wear gloves, i didn't spray Lysol. I'm not trying to say I'm not goona be sterile, but how come allot of people have a harder time with contams, and are alot safer? i live in MN and its winter, so maybe there are less mold spores in the air? i don't know, but i am goona start being more sterile, so i can learn to do it the right way. i have not had any problems so far and i am fruiting some small trays for my first grow.. hopefully i didn't jinx myself for the mono tubs i started.. but if everything works out i should have some great pics to contribute to the site..

Room sterility depends from room to room. Kitchens are known to have more mold and some people here refuse to do anything in them because of the food molds that are possible.

The factors of contams are so many. You seem to have gotten lucky if you didn't even clean the needle, thats one thing I always do. Same with Lysol. One thing to remember, there is no "right way" if something works for you, then by all means do what works best for you. Congrats on 33 healthy jars. Now that they are colonized, chance of getting a contam is somewhere in the 10% range. Until 100% colonization, it's about 90% chance of being overrun if it is hit with a contam.

thanks. i guess thats why i did so many jars.. and i keep doing g2g so its a never ending process.. i figure that the more i do the better chances of me having success.. trial and error.. I'm experimenting with different things, its really exciting.. I'm trying some small casings and a handful of mono tubs. goona do some straw next.. its alot of fun.. goona try to be more sterile about it from now on though.

Definitely fun to try new ways out. I had a green house that failed me, so I made monotubs. I'm in love with them now, if you'll check a few posts down got my first results from them earlier today.

Next thing I'm looking into is hpoo. Wanna jump up to the best possible potency! Just did my first two LCs, recommend reading into those and doing some. Definitely will be nice to have mycelium on hand. (which, actually makes contams even less possible to happen once you put it in the grain)

Does almost everyone use a glovebox? I'm tempted to try my first time without one just to save time/effort. If I get a bunch of contams, then I'll know what went wrong. I'll still use an alcohol/flame sterile technique, but I just don't really feel like making a glovebox..

I don't have a glovebox. Though I do plan on making some form of one when I do my first printing. Just going to do something extremely simple. You don't need to have one to make healthy jars though.
