Fruiting question with Spawn Bag
    #8010662 - 02/11/08 08:12 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

I have the EZ gro Spawn Bag and I'm near the final stage. The grains colonized , I mixed the Manure, and the Myc has spread through the compost pretty well. No contamination.

My question is. I've had the spawn bag in my TIT Incubator for about 4-5 days now with a couple hours a day out of it for air circulation since room temp was to low. The directions say not to put it in a closed envirement but it wasn't colonizing the compost without incubation.

Now the compost and Substrate is colonized about 60-65 Percent. How long do I need to keep it in the incubator before I need to leave in the open for fruiting? Do I need to let it colonize the compost 100 Percent? The directions say I need to wait for the Myc to work to the top and through the compost but I don't want to wait to long to fruit.

Thanks

Be careful with incubation in closed containers with substrates like this.

I am not familiar with this kit your using, but it sounds like you did some sort of spawning to manure or compost. If this is case, you don't want it incubating. Molds and bacteria like those high temps just as much, but they LOVE that stale air. Thats why the instructions said to keep it in the open.

Yes I used Kowanite compost. Manure. I only keep it in the incubator for 12 hours a day. The problem is before I put it in the incubator it wouldn't colonize at all due to the temps being to cold. The spawn bag has a filter patch but other than that it's sealed. So far no Contams have krept in.

This is kind of a tricky situation, you want your bag warm, but not to warm. Switching it in and out is probably not good for things, it might stunt myc. growth. I don't know for sure if it would, but its a possibility. Is there any place you could keep it in open air that stays over 70F?

Really if you are keeping it indoors, unless your house is really really cold (and I wouldn't expect it to be at this time of year), it should colonize just fine at room temperature. I colonized in a spawn bag of compost a few weeks ago and it worked just fine at room temperature. You don't want the temperature to vary that much, taking it in and out of the incubator is not a good idea.

The temps are just now getting better out here. right now the temps stay in the low 60's during the day and 50's at night. At night is when I keep it incubated at 80 Degrees. The Myc groth isn't slowing at all actually it just started speeding up after I started putting it in the incubator. Now it's probably about 75-80 Percent colonized. I just need to know how much the compost needs to colonize before it begins to fruit. 90%? 100%? Cause when it's ready I guess I can stop putting it in the Incubator and leave it at 60 Degrees.

My Brf Cakes are in an aquarium fruiting chamber and they are fruiting just fine at 60 Degrees. They were kind of slow when the temps were in the low 50's like it was up until a couple weeks ago.

I think one of my problems was I didn't fluff the compost much during colonization. I just fluffed it up and noticed it growing more evenly. I hope this helps.
