Azure Woodchip Spawn Recipe Question.

I bought some aspen gerbil bedding from Petco today. It is currently boiling and is nearly done. My question to you is, provided I am using a 4:1 wood to BRF ratio, should I add vermiculite (yes?) and at what ratio to woodchips? And should I hydrate the verm to field capacity when doing so? Any help is appreciated.

No, but chop it up if it's flakes. I'd add some woodchips too. When you spawn it into the ground, make sure there's lots of nice sized sticks in there, because there what the mycelium will fruit from, not the bedding. RR

Copy that. So, when I spawn to the ground I will add some larger chunks at that point and be okay? Organic hardwood wood chips are hard to come by in the rural west in mid-February, sans internet.
How do you judge the water content in the spawn mix? Same as any other sub? Squeeze test? Also, any good links to wood-lover teks that have served others well in the past are welcome.

here is that I do for what you are talking about. Boil the aspen shavings, let cool in the water. This is important becasue they will dry out if you let them cool out of water. Once cool put them in a colander. Once that are done draining add the flour straight to the aspen. The flour will suck up the extra moisture. If your chips are not done draining then just add more flour. Water content isnt super crucial here because you are not fruiting this stuff. As long as the aspen/brf feels damp when you jar it up it will be fine. Mycelium grows in a wide range of water content percentages. There is of corse ideal content but you can big deal that. I only p'cook those types of jars for 30 mins and they grow just fine.
If you do have a pc then you should just grow a shit load of grain spawn and spawn your beds directly with a thin layer at the bottom of the beds or you can add it to tubs of wood chips like this. http://allyoucanupload.webshots.com/v/2002746050971113223
as for organic wood chips??? WTF??? 99.999% of bagged woodchips come from the wild and are naturaly grown. If they were not it still isnt a big deal. Organic is not important. I use this stuff for my beds and it works great and will be very easy to fine if you live in the rural west. It also comes in three colors and home depot has palets of it right now

Still not sure if I know what i am talking about???

I was just worried about fungicides, or whatever. No big deal. And, I went to every open nursery in the valley, and every box store looking for just hardwood woodchips. Nothing. Just pine. Aspen gerbil/hamster bedding was all I could come up with.
Anyway, I tried to follow your PFTek style woodlover tek, and It helped a lot. I went 4:1, as you suggest, but did end up adding about 1.5 parts verm. I tried to get as near to "field capacity" as I could, squeezing out a couple drops and calling it good.
So anyway, when I go to fruit, or put into the bed I make, adding larger 1 inch sized wood-chips is mandatory, and what the mycelium will actually fruit off of?
Thanks for the help.

yeah, wally has some cheap grilling chips now. 1.50 for a little bag. Go to the home depot, lowes and get those scotts chips. They are doug fir which is great for fruiting azures. They are also dyed different colors which tend to fight off contaminants.
I am not sure what you mean by what the mycelium will actually fruit off of?
Are you asking if they will fruit off big or small chips? I know that sawdust doesnt not promote decent yeilds but chips 1-3 inches in size work best.

The Naturescapes seemed extra fine when I checked it out. There was another no name brand that was made up of larger and smaller chunks and it was dyed hardwood mulch. I called the company who manufactures it to see if they added fungicide. They said "no" so I went with it and it is growing fine. I also did not add flour to my bags of wet chips and it is still happy eating up the wood. My 2 cents.
