After reviewing this http://www.shroomery.org/index.php/par/25056
Can perlite be substituted?
and would it be better to set the cakes directly on the wet perlite or to have a layer of tin foil for each cake?
thankZ!

it's better to use lids from the jars to set the cakes on. foil reflects the light and makes it more likely for the mushies to grow down (possibly into the perlite).

actually I find it better to sit them directly on the perlite. No need for lid or tin foil.

i always heard that it was not good to put it right on the perilite because it can cause mold (i think that was why) or because the mushies will start growing straight into the perilite. im new, so i dont know either way, but thats what i heard.

never heard it, and never had that issue. Doesn't RR put them straight on perlite in his vid?

no he uses foil. I don't know if your using peroxide to stave off contams in your perlite I would assume putting the cakes directly on would be a little dumb. Can I suggest wax paper, no reflection and no plastics to possibly leach into your mushies.
BTW I'm using perlite and it works great.

um, i've used perlite with no paper. It works fine. Once cakes are fully colonized, it's difficult for contams to get a foothold.

Only problem I have ran into with putting cakes on perlite is that sometimes the mycelium decides to colonize the perlite instead of fruiting.

I just suggested wax paper cause that's like the fourth person I've read complain about the reflectiveness of Tinfoil and I know wax paper shouldn't colonize. I've never tried it but I've never heard of any mushroom food that was even remotely like wax.
Also I think I've read at least six other people complain about myc colonizing the perlite (at least one such complaint where the cake was put on the lid). I would definitely put some sort of medium that won't colonize between the cake and the perlite for at least an inch around the cake on all sides (someone almost always gave this suggestion in any post of this nature).
Personally though I'm a noob just waiting on my first grows (pinning in a PMP). I have however invested a lot of time in study of the subject beforehand.
