Cytokinins role in mycelium development?
    #8038150 - 02/18/08 02:01 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

I've been researching kelp meal for about 2 hours now trying to figure out why it would lead to explosive growth in rye jars. My final theory is that kelp based fertilizers are rich in cytokinins. In plants it leads to rapid cell division, so I guess my question is, does it do the same thing to mycelium?

Excerpt from wikipedia:

(Kombu (Laminaria japonica and others), several Pacific species of kelp, is a very important ingredient in Japanese cuisine. Kombu is used to flavor broths and stews (especially dashi), as a savory garnish (tororo konbu) for rice and other dishes, as a vegetable, and a primary ingredient in popular snacks (such as tsukudani). Transparent sheets of kelp (oboro konbu) are used as an edible decorative wrapping for rice and other foods.[4]

Kombu can be used to soften beans during cooking, and to help convert indigestible sugars and thus reduce flatulence.)

Seeing as how fungi are more like us (animals) than plants I make the assumption that the converting of sugars may play a part helping mycelia growth. The same way that compost is better because it has already been partialy broken down.

Then again cytokinins could play a role. A good test would be to add pure cytokinins to a rye jar and have a control rye jar without cytolkinins and see if there is a difference in growth. You'd have to use a isolated strain to rule out any genetic differences.

When I used powdered kelp in agar it was too salty and led to poor growth.

Cytokinin is what builds the cell walls right?
