Adding kelp meal to grain soak
    #8037925 - 02/18/08 01:14 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

Basically I was out of coffee and it was cold as hell outside so I decided to try something new. I've only tried this once but the results were amazing so I'll be trying it again soon.

First I rinsed 5 pounds of rye berries and put them in a bucket and covered them in tap water, then I took a small saucepan and boiled 2 tablespoons each of gypsum and kelp meal for about 20 minutes. The gypsum I use is actually some old drywall I found in my basement that I just break a chunk off of and crush with a mortar and pestle. Then I poured it through a coffee filter into the bucket, stirred it up and let it soak for 24 hours. After the soak I rinsed the grain again and boiled it in some of the soak water. Whenever I simmer grains I just bring the water to a vigorous boil before adding the grains then cover it and set the stove to the lowest setting and let it sit for about an hour. Doing it this way I never have any problems with burst kernels. Then I pour it into a strainer, rinse it and let it sit and drain for about 15 minutes. Then I take some shop towels (They are like blue paper towel, but way stronger) and measure out 3.5 cups of grain onto each one, next I gather the 4 corners together and toss it around to get the grain as dry as possible before putting it into the jars. The nice part is the towel makes a great funnel if you just let go of 2 opposite corners and the dry grain pours in beautifully.

Anyway, the results...

I had 7 quart jars that I inoculated with a grain LC (See Agar's tek). Normally it takes about 3 days to see a lot of growth, and about a week to finish. This time it was less than 2 days before I had streaks of white down the sides of the jar and after I shook them another 2 days they were at 100%. I also had 3 half pint jars I knocked up with three different MS syringes. I thought they had contaminated because they didn't show any signs of growth after about 5 days, but all three just exploded with growth and it was the same as with the quart jars after I shook them, they recovered way faster then normal and now 8 days later they are near 100% colonization. I have another batch of rye soaking the same way, so I guess I'll find out if it was a fluke or not soon, but I was surprised at the results, usually my experimenting ends up smelling very bad...
