Coprinus Comatus fermenter

I thought I would share this inexpensive effective fermenter with you that I made. I consists of a aquarium pump, silicone tubing for the cooking, flow control valve, millipore filter disk, and a injection port with 1/4 inch hole punched in it.
The filter disk is inserted into the grommet and the aerator tube attached on the the other end of the filter. Two holes are punched on each side of the lid, one for silicone injection port and one covered with micro-pore tape. The unit is pressure cooked for 15-20 min At 15 psi assembled with loose cap and aluminum foil wrapped around the lid.
After cooled you can either put it in front of the old hood and insert a piece of culture or inject culture with syringe. if you use a piece of tissue on agar the piece will get big and fuzzy the first 3 days or so. After the 3rd day it will release thousands of fragments and this is when you can start harvesting. The whole process is very fast. Less than 5 days with the shaggies.
Also if you have a taller jar use it. If you use a small jar do not fill more than half way.

The air exits out of a nail hole on top with micropore tape on top. The hole could be a bit bigger for a smoother exit.

Is this a species requirement? (the air exchanges, that is) Or, are you just trying to improve the quality of conditions for the mycelium to provide better quality inoculum material?
Just curious because most methods I see don't require this kind of aeration for LC (as long as you're using it within a few days to a week of LC inoculation).

You wouldn't believe your eyes if you have never tried this before. Yes! It puts the mycelium in a frenzied state of growth resulting in some explosive leap off and colonization time. |If you do this in a larger jar you could potentially inoculate 100's of spawn jars in a relatively short time, 3-5 days with most gilled species. Give them more food and oxygen and they will repay you with lots of inoculum. A friend of mine made a larger one with shitake mycelium a moth or so ago. Check his out! Big fermenter

Do you think that an aquarium pump is the best source for supplying the air? Maybe something else? Everything else I have nice equipment for and will try to do a Trametes versicolor fermentor in the next few days. I also have some TSB broth, should I use it or just plain honey/water@4% ?

Isn't there a pretty big potential risk for contam. Your introducing new air constantly. More air=more mold spores right? Or is it that there's so much air the mold doesn't like it?

the filter he is using is 0.2 microns. That is effective at keeping out contams.
They are used in commercial operations for filtering air supplies to sterile vessels.

They are also very, very effective and reliable in the production of sterile solutions. (The product to be sterilized MUST be COMPLETELY soluble.) If you want a quick way to make 30-60mL of sterile honey/water or some other LC material, use one of these. It takes seconds instead of minutes or hours.
It has the added benefit of producing an extremely clear solution for growth, which means anything you see in it, is something you added! Now, whether that is mycelium, contaminates, particulate or something else is entirely up to your technique once you've made the solution.
