Equipment, Round #2

Alright, I hit up the beer store, and scored pretty much the rest of what I need to get this party started. Here we go:
First, an additional airlock

How about 140 new caps?

Maybe a couple 3/8" hose clamps

Always need a Graduated Cylinder for the hydrometer...

10" funnel with screen is always handy.

Carboy bungs, both drilled and not:

Some carboy thermometers...

Mmmm, a lovely glass wine theif

And how about some ingredients while I'm at it?
Here we have some wheat LME

And the label from said LME showing mix and recipe

Mmmmm, some tasty cranberry flavoring

Not what you think, it's just some priming sugar

Mmmm, some tasty hops. Perle on top, Saaz on the bottom.

And last, but not least...the catalyst.

That about does it, minus a couple pieces of clear plastic tubing, and some bleach. It's definately cheaper to buy stuff second hand, this new stuff was a bit expensive. Plan on cooking this up this week, with my buddy, and now my father has a renewed interest too. Will keep you all posted.

Yeah, especially with having the ingredients kit. It's mostly just about amassing the equipment, but it's pretty much a buy once, use for a lifetime thing provided you avoid plastic. Only recurring expenses are ingredients and bottle caps. Maybe some new hoses every once and a while. I'm planning on snapping some photos while I do it, so that'll give you an idea. If you have $, you can just run out and buy a pre-compiled brew kit and some ingredients and be set, but that's just not my style. Only thing is you need to keep everything clean, and sanitize everything that comes in contact with the wort, but that's nothing that mycologists aren't used to, and you can get away with bleach water as opposed to PCing to sterilize.

Well...My brew got pushed back to next week. Took my dad to the store with me, because my partner in crime couldn't make it, dad ends up picking up a 6.5 carboy so he can get back into brewing. Apparently he used to do it before he met my momma. Anywho, was gonna do it tomorrow night, but partner in crime has meeting, and I going out of town this weekend. With any luck tho, said partner and dad and I will get together and get this bitch started next week, probably sometime around weds. Will post pics and all that jazz.

Looking forward to it. I'll probably start my first batch this spring when I clear some room for equipment and save some funds. Right now I'm reading brewing books. Cheers!

The most fun so far has been trying a bunch of different beers I've never had in an effort to get enough bottles for my beer.

Orb, DO NOT JUST BREW WITH HOPS AND EXTRACT!
I have no knowledge on that style of beer your trying to make but you NEED to steep some grains before the boil. Even just using 40L or 60L Crystal Malt is going to help with coloration, aroma and flavoring. Dextrine Malt is going to help significantly with head retention.

It is not necessary to sterilize anything. Or get some iodophor and sanitize it. Terribly cheap and very effective, and won't leave any off flavors in the beer if you don't rinse thoroughly or if you made the bleach solution too strong. While I worked professional we used 3 different sanitizers, Starsan, Saniclean, and iodophor. All available at your local homebrew supply.

I didn't say that sterilization was necessary for anything. You're right about the iodophor and all that, but the closest homebrew store to me is an hour away, and bleach is closer and cheaper. A gallon for $1 from the dollar store. How long were you pro?

btw, for those following my project, it was a cluster fuck. All in all, three other people showed up, and they all were drunk. I was the only one that actually read directions, books or teks, and the only one with any actual experience was my father. As you can imagine, there were four different opinions about how everything should be done. That and LME makes a great big nasty sticky mess. Anywho, we did manage to get everything done and pitched the yeast at 11:30 or so last night, so I'll have an idea of how it's doing when I get home this evening. I couldn't even find my camera so, for that, i apologize. Will keep you guys updated.

1 year, after I've had a couple years of homebrewing under my belt.

I was a professional brewmaster. I started out homebrewing. After a couple years, I was able to land a job at a brewery and then brewed professionally for a year. They later closed down due to the owners not paying their taxes.

You get out of it after that, or go looking for a different place to brew?
