Take Action Against Salvia Criminalization - Updated
    #8034923 - 02/17/08 02:26 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

I'm posting this here so that more people will see it.
While the DEA is already planning to schedule Salvia divinorum, state governments one by one are subscribing to this latest moral panic.

I'd like to call to your attention these three states below, who are currently planning, but have not yet decided to, criminalize Salvia.

I'm asking anyone who lives in those states: Please! Stand up for your rights. Do a bit of research, and if your state government ever holds public hearings, offer to represent our community and stand up for Salvia. Gather up the journal articles we have access to. Tell them that Salvia is not dangerous, has shown no negative long-term effects, and can be used responsibly by people over a certain age, just like the alcohol they so dearly love.

Two people in Maine went to their public hearing and convinced the committee to restrict the sale of Salvia to people over 18, instead of banning it completely. Link. On this precedent, a second state decided to do the same thing.

These are the states working on bills right now:

Minnesota - House and Senate
Florida - HB 1363 - In Committee Now!
Indiana
Virginia
Kentucky <- Bill forthcoming, will update when it is published.

Please don't just sit on your pile of 40x and think that it's not your problem because you're "set for life." Stocking up is not a permanant solution, and it's not the right solution. When Salvia criminalization comes to your state, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.
It only takes a few people to make a difference. But if no one goes, then Salvia will undoubtedly be criminalized.

When they come to South Carolina, you can expect me there.

Updated to add: Minnesota

that's "quoted for truth," not "quit fucking talking"

I know that if ever my state were to create a bill banning Salvia, I would absolutely stand up against it. We really need to stand up and stay firm, people...

The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of history has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence:

From bondage to spiritual faith;
From spiritual faith to great courage;
From courage to liberty;
From liberty to abundance;
From abundance to selfishness;
From selfishness to complacency;
From complacency to apathy;
From apathy to dependence;
From dependence back into bondage.

I agree with the thread starter.

Also, if Salvia is made illegal, won't someones stockpile also be made illegal?

If you stockpile on salvia a couple days before its made illegal, wouldn't it be ex post facto to arrest you afterward?

Of course building a stockpile of Salvia now would be legal, and ideally no one would know that you have it after illegalization. But when Salvia is made illegal, your stockpile becomes illegal too. So if they, while raiding your house, find a few grams of a Schedule 1 substance, you'll be in even deeper shit than you usually would.

youre a little late lol
there was already a law proposed here in ca making it schedule 1
daniel siebert and several others stood up against it
so they edited the law and made it a misdemeanor to give to minors

its unlikely, here in ca we mostly have to worry about federal now

in my opinoin salvia is the drug with the least likely to be abused. it anything should be distributed as an alternative to other drugs.

It's still legal in Nebraska yet someone has been arrested for selling it there already. I posted the story in the news forum earlier tonight.

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/8133737/an/0/page/0

TN to my west has banned it and VA to the north is about to so I can imagine NC will be following along before too long. I have not heard anything of it yet though. I may be able to put my plants out for another warm season after all. I've been watching the news and keeping my fingers crossed waiting for spring. They grow so much better outside.

To be honest, I'll have to quit growing salvia if it's criminalized. I have a family to think about.

The DEA is considering salvia legislation. I would think that would be good enough for the states to wait and see what they determine but... Nope.

The question is why? There is no public outcry or genuine danger. Most of the public at large don't even no of it's existence. Most of those that do are people like us, who even if uninterested in salvia, don't feel it should be criminalized.

For the most part it's only law makers out to make a name for themselves after hearing a news story somewhere that sensationalizes it for the advertising dollars they rake in.

Speaking of news, The Associated Press did an article on it today. That hit more news outlets than any previous articles I've seen. It was the first I've ever seen on my local news outlets. One TV station's site that I frequent posts comments from readers. 29 comments were posted today in regards to the article and not a single one of them was for the criminalization of salvia. That actually surprised me as the is a pretty conservative area. I'm sure the churches will jump on the bandwagon and get the ball rolling soon enough though.

There is no vocal general public out to ban salvia but only a vocal one can stop it from happening.

I agree with this on the most part. It is hard to abuse salvia because of the tolerance you build to it. You can't smoke salvia every day, and even every weekend is pushing it. People use lots of other legal substances as well such as cough syrup. I don't see why they would go to all the trouble of criminalizing salvia especially when there isn't even huge risks involved with using it.

Sure you can. I have in the past. The more you smoke the less it takes. Salvia has a reverse tolerance. You can build a tolerance of some extent to it. I doubt 99.9% will ever approach that level of use though.

I have certainly abused salvia. I'm a rarity in that though. You are right in salvia isn't likely to be abused but tolerance has nothing to do with it.

As far as "feeling the effects," I don't think it will be a problem for us Canadians in the long run...as long as we grow our own, or can buy locally made SD. However, this most definitely does affect Canadians who order from US-based web sites.

Updated to add bills for Minnesota. On Monday (yesterday), the Florida bill was referred to the Safety and Security council, having passed through the Committee on Homeland Security without changes. How many of you who live in Florida have looked into doing anything concrete about this?

how does one find if my state will hold hearings on illegalization?

BTW people here is a great site i just found with basically every state and salvia's legal status. More importantly, it mentions the people who are proposing its illegalization and the bills that will do so.
