I will go you one further with my opinion...all actions are triggered by desire and desire only. Is fear not the desire to be safe?

if i trip over a rock and injure myself, did i desire to trip on that rock? or did i have a fear of standing?

Perhaps you were walking by that rock because you desired something, and your desire lead you to not notice the rock as you were fixated on something else.

So in essence desire caused you to trip IMO.

Yes it is, but what if you had to do something you didn't wan't to do but had to anyways.

If you did not want to do something, but had to, would it be a product of fear?

I think this is beside the point. I am talking about conscious actions mainly.

What would you change about the comment?

Well, basically I would change it from "Everything you do is triggered by an emotion of either desire or fear," to "Not everything you do is triggered by an emotion of either desire or fear."

For example, I smoke cigarettes. I in NO WAY desire to smoke cigarettes. It is the one thing I would change about myself if I could. But I smoke anyway because I am addicted.

There's TONS of other little things that are not done out of fear or desire as well. I just peeled an orange and put the peel pieces on the desk in front of me. I didn't desire to put them there; I just did. Right now I am bopping my head to some music I'm listening to. I had no conscious desire to bop my head; I just did!

Not saying it's a stupid quote or anything at all... It does fit for most things. I'm just saying it's not completely and utterly correct.

Namaste.

"You desire things that you need"

What about you need things that you desire ?
This is one of those questions that has to do with dialethics. If you look into evolutionist theories, you'll see that every stage of evolution of man (and other living things) is triggered by need, like the need for survival expressed by the dialethics feet-hands-brain: man stood in two feet because he had the need to run faster, the thumb oposed to the hand because of the need to grab things like tools and weapons, the brain developed linguistics because of the need to comunicate, live and hunt in a group, all of this because of the need man have to eat or survive, man evolves needing to adapt to the enviroment. Even if you desire something or fear something, there's no need to take any action, the action is taken if you have the need to change that state of desire or fear, thus it's subjective, it depends if you are impulsive and try to supress the desire rigth away: i'm hungry, i desire food because my body needs food to keep functioning, i'm i going to eat now ? Possibly(subjective) but i need food anyway. I'm affraid of the sandman, what then ? Do i need to take action because i'm affraid ? Do i need to be affraid ?
The cigar example is more than clear, body has a need for nicotine, that need is translated into the desire to smoke but first is the need.
