With regards to straw (pics)
    #8033201 - 02/16/08 11:38 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

I've filled two little shoebox size plastic bins with a layer of colonized WBS, a layer of straw, another layer of colonized WBS, and then manure, with colonized WBS mixed into it.
5 days later, they look like this.

The top looks all nice. But as I look in through the side, I can see that the straw isn't very colonized.
I went ahead and threw a casing layer down on top of it yesterday though, but I'm wondering why the straw isn't colonizing very quickly, and if its going to be a problem.

You're only at day 5 everything is ok it looks to be near 100%, I would have waited until it was just a bit more colonized before casing but you shouldn't have an problems.

So the layer of uncolonized straw doesn't matter?

How uncolonized is it? If it's close to 100% you're ok if it's significantly uncolonized other problems could arouse.

The fact that you already added your casing layer means you could initiate fruiting a bit too soon for your substrate but it shouldn't be a HUGE problem as long as the straw is near full colonization.

Aight... I dunno, the straw is probably about 80%. Manure about 100. I just wanted to get the casing layer down because I don't have much free time and didn't think I'd have a spare hour or two to pasteurize casing material in the next week or so.
Thanks for the tip though, I thought it looked ready for casing, I'll wait a bit longer next time.
Hopefully it'll pan out...

You could potentially have a smaller yield since the mycelium hasn't colonized all the way, the straw could also be more susceptible to contams but considering the fact that you have colonized manure and a casing layer above the straw you'll have a higher chances of success imo.

Thanks... I'll be sure to post pics once its done, and then follow them up with some pics of a few other tubs that I've let incubate longer for comparison.
I appreciate the advice mang.
