Saving a loph by grafting (?)
    #8032656 - 02/16/08 08:50 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

One of the smaller lophs I have developed rot up the side on the root and on some of the head

It's root is also shriveled and not healthy looking compared to the other ones I have. I think it's pretty much on the verge of being overcome by the rot and dying, I gave it extra light and heat (artificial) to help it dry out the moist patch and slow down the spread of the rot....it seems to have helped a bit.

Anyways I don't think it's going to last unless I operate

I have a perfectly healthy pedro I could graft it to, would this save my cactus or do I risk rot spreading to the pedro too? I took pictures but they aren't that great so I apologize, they don't really capture the rot as I would have liked them to.

Should I graft or just toss it?

beyond saving.

sorry.

if you want anything of it, cut it open to expose as much of the inside as possible and fan-dry it.

otherwise it will spoil too much to consume.

but is its NOT savable

you COULD graft a areole or something, but you might as well just start with seeds for all the trouble. its dead from root to meristem. the only living tissue is cut off from any viable nutrient conduit. rot likes to travel up the core, and with lophs, its a short ride.

so basically, what you have there is a lump of harvested peyote nearing expiry date

yea, I'd eat it before I just tossed it. I think the peyote would prefer it that way.
Sorry for your loss.

We all feel your loss. I cant wait to start a peyote conservation effort, and grow as many as I can.
