RPC terminated unexpectedly - system shutting down

Alright so I've been having this problem ever since I went out of town a few weeks ago and I'm thinking my roommate got on my PC and got it infected with something. Every once in a while, I'll lose connection to the router for whatever reason.. and a message will pop up saying such... then I get an error... RPC service terminated unexpectedly.. system shutting down in 60 seconds. And then my system reboots and nothing I can do to stop it.
I've been doing some looking online and this is usually connected to the MSBlast worm.. but no scanner has found it and I've followed the instructions here to no avail. I've also used the removal tool here - http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.blaster.worm.removal.tool.html But it finds nothing.

since no ones replied yet.. Ive been told to try as many different scanners as you can since I assume they have different detection methods and virus libraries
I got a little paranoid a while ago and looked up a bunch of anti virus/spyware programs, might be of some use

Dude thats the ms blaster worm from years ago.
Grab a version of nod32 (from mininova), and then go to nod321.com for a serial.

Yup I do believe thats MS BLASTER like Cepheus said. I've had it myself (well my computer did) quite some time ago.
I dunno if I manually removed it using instructions or ran a removal tool. Try a tool first, its an old virus so a tool likely exists.

If you still have it, you can stop it shutting down by typing 'shutdown -a' at a command prompt.

I forgot to mention.. but I have a whole slew of antivirus software.. spyware removal etc.. on this machine.. nothing has found anything.
I have:
- Avast antivirus - Spybot (and SD resident) - Winpatrol - Spywareblaster - Superantispyware - HijackThis! - Ad-Aware - Norman Malware Cleaner - CCleaner
and a few more random programs.. I even ran two different MSBLASTER remover tools, and they found nothing.
Tried following the manual instructions for removing it, the files they mention don't exist on my hard drive.
I'm sort of at a loss here as to why this is still happening. Everytime I lose an internet signal (wireless loses signal, router resets, etc.. ), I get that message and the shut down window. I know I can stop it from shutting down by typing the command prompt.. but I want to fix the problem at the source.
I'm going to try NOD32 and see if that finds anything.. I had it before but my trial thing wore off.

Yeah.. sort of. Can't remember what it's called exactly. Ethos version or something. With SP3.
Thing is.. I never had this problem until about a month ago. My XP always worked fine before then.. even if I got DCed from the internet. Ever since my roommate used it it's been having this problem, everytime I lose internet signal.. bam that annoying message pops up and RPC service terminated blah blah blah. I can't seem to fix it either, I've tried just about everything I've read about it on the web. There is no MSBLAST virus on my computer.. unless nod32, avast, avg, various other anti-malware, three different MSBLAST remover tools etc are all lying to me.
What's even weirder is that whenever I get that shutdown message, if I type 'shutdown -a' in Run... it stops it from restarting... but a ton of things cease working until I restart. Like copy and paste. And playing music files... if I tell a file to play in X music program, it does nothing, until I restart. It's really weird. And apparently my computer is free of viruses so I don't know WTF is going on.

mebbe you should try fixing your windows install..
You still got the cd you used to install it? boot from it and go to repair installation..

Also, SP3 is still beta.. and those custom xp cds are dodgy (although I'm running one on a partition and its fine).. maybe a windows update bricked it?

Yeah.. that's the thing see.. it took me about 2 weeks to get XP properly installed on this thing. Drivers were a bitch and a half to find (since it's a brand new laptop and it came with Vista), and I had to make a special slipstream disc with all the drivers installed to get it to work... but I lost it :P But after I got it installed right, it ran flawlessly for about 3 months. I know the custom XP installs are dodgy, but from everything I read.. the Ethos? one was the most solid of all.
I'm scared to try and run a repair with a normal XP disc.. because I don't want to have to go through that nightmare again of blue screens and reinstall after reinstall. I know that sounds stupid.. but I honestly spent over 2 weeks, reinstalling windows over and over.. getting the right drivers.. burning about 20 different XP cds.. just to get it working properly. I honestly don't even remember everything I did and I don't know if I could replicate it.. and I would hate to have to install Vista. But ever since then I haven't had -any- problems except for this one, which only popped up after someone messed with my computer. I would rather avoid a reinstall at all costs... only as a last resort.. mostly because I have a TON of software installed on here I would hate to have to reinstall. But also the above mentioned situation.. other than this inconvenience every couple days, XP works fine.. so I would avoid a reinstall unless it was completely broken.

In which case, go through the recent updates that have been installed.. uninstall the most recent and then work backwards.. normally when something is fubar'd its something to do with microsoft

I'll bet this only happens when you're connected to the internet.
I had this exact problem some time ago. I was never able to pinpoint it exactly.. and doing some quick googling, still can't find what causes it. I just remember that (in my case, anyway) it had something to do with rasdial (which is the built-in dialer for Windows) and that I had to download Windows updates as soon as I connected to the internet prior to the error coming up.
I'd tell you which hotfix it was if I knew.
Just avoid downloading the one's that don't allow you to remove them once they've been installed.

ProoN - Yes, it only happens when I'm connected to the internet. I've tried the various hotfixes that people mention to fix this problem, but I always get "Setup Error: The Service Pack version of the system installed is newer than the update you are applying to it".. so I can't install the stupid updates.
poke smot! - Yes I know you can run "shutdown -a" to stop it from shutting down. It works... but when I do this, a bunch of other stuff stops working - like my clipbook (copy and paste), dragging and dropping files fails to work.. and basically my computer acts REALLY funky until I reboot. So everytime I get this message, I basically have to reboot.
I've tried Trend Micro House Call.. Trend Micro System Clean... AVG... Avast.... NOD32... about 40 other programs. By all accounts I don't have any viruses, malware, trojans, worms, or anything else on this computer. I've tried manual uninstall, the files for MSBLAST do not exist on my computer.

I just fixed this about two weeks ago, the rpc service is set to restart computer when it crashes, go to control panel-> admin-> services-> Remote Procedure Call and double click on it. go to recovery tab and select restart service instead of restart computer. nice little fix that drove me nuts hope it works

To fix the symptoms of the problem hit CTRL+ALT+DEL>Task manager>applications>new task and type 'shutdown -a' without the single quotes. This will stop the shutdown process.
