ok.. well I decided a few weeks ago to try coir as a substrate.. nothing added... just expanded coir... no sterilization or pasteurization... cased with 100% verm, as I am sure you know is my casing of choice...
here's where it gets kinda hairy.. I didnt get the moisture content right because I didnt squeeze the coir before I put it in the fruiting trays.. I know I know.. I should know better.. but hey.. it was my first time with a new sub...
I spawned with crumbled brf cakes, and sent it on a spawn run... but since I didnt wring out the water out of the coir when I put it in, it wouldnt grow.. just the top... I could see spots of myc everywhere, but it didnt fully colonize AT ALL... I took one tray that got dropped on the ground and took it outside and broke it open, and it was still mostly coir... not like a fully colonized sub...
well.. by this time, I had already had some more brf cakes on the way, and I had another brick of coir... so I figured I would start over... but i decided to case these trays and put them in my martha, just to see what they would do..
now remember... these trays are not evern 10% colonized, from what I see.. its not like other things, where it looks pure white all over... its coir brown with lil spots and strings of myc running through it... AND THIS IS THE CRAZY PART!!! THESE WERE AFTER BEING IN THERE 8 DAYS!!! SERIOUSLY.. I SAW PINS AFTER 3 OR 4 DAYS... I WOKE UP THIS MORNING, SAW THIS AND HHHAAAADDDD TO POST IT...
coir is a great substrate.. never going back to anything else... haha
here ya goooooooo
the 3 trays.. the big one will be done tonight or tomorrow..
Tray 1..
Tray 2..
I just thought this whole experiment gone wrong turned out nice for me fucking it up so bad... next time I post pics, it will be with a full martha...
hehehehehehehhehehehehehhehehe

Nice!

yeah.. so far i am very impressed with this substrate.. so much that I am not using anything else... at least for bulk... how does your coir look when it is fully colonized? can you post a pic? im hoping more cats will start trying coir as a substrate rather than knock it... lol.. I have read nothing but good stuff, and even though I fucked up with it, I still got a decent flush.. way more than I was expecting.. I cant wait to see what I am going to get after I do it right this next time.. Im going to prepare 2 more tray tomorrow and send them on their spawn run... we will see what happens in a few weeks..

i strongly recommend adding a nitrogen additive like coffee. i use coir/coffee/organic bloodmeal/gypsum and have great later flushes. using coir alone is fine for the first maybe second flushes, but potency is almost gone after that, and the substrate will shrink considerably.

Good job DJYoshaBYD.
Are those butter dishes by any chance?
Buckets are good too, especially since they're so freely available and work as well as they do.
Next try adding spent coffee grounds to your coir. GL

yeah.. I know... Im cool with what I got.. lol
UPDATE!!! I just pulled the other ones off the big ones, as the caps had matured.. new weight... 341 grams... 1st flush... failed experiment... coir is the shit..
I may try some coffee and whatnot in the future.. but I am going to try it again without anything else, and see what happens... then I will throw in some coffee and some other shit and try it like that...
really, 2 flushes would be fine, as I have everything staged now to crop every 6-8 days... my friends and I are loving eating shrooms all the time.. its alot better than buying them out here.. thats why I started doing this... cats are trying to charge 30 and 35 an 8th.. fuck that.. lol.. plus, its a fun hobby...

actually the are the plastic bowl things that go over the 50 pack of cdrs... I just rap them with foil.. they work great.. I was lit one night and saw them and thought they would be good to use..
these results are nothing like my old poo/straw growing days, but I totally see the potential... I recommend this shit... it works...
I know what I am doing now with coir, so the next one will be savage... and I may do a write up in the future, to instill some more faith in this cheap, non smelly substrate..

ok... soo I just started 3 sweater tubs of coir... I did my moisture content right.. its been 4 days, and I am seeing faster growth than other substrate I have ever used... I will post pics from the first flush on that one, because it might net around a qp or more dry.. at least judging by the last time... I also dunked the casings.. again, they were not fully colonized, so I got less than satisfying results, but I ended up getting one loner shroom that weighed in at 33 grams wet.. it was just a massive loner fruit...
As soon as I got pics I will post them... I will try to take pics of my coir colonizing, but my camera sucks, and it wont be very clear... I will keep updating this, and showing my results, that way maybe some other cats will be inspired to use this substrate...
ooo yeah... they are still fruiting, and have not got any sort of infection yet... at least not that I can see... no sterilization/pasteurization at all.. straight coir....
