What can I get rid of?

New laptop, came with Vista, already crashed not even 24 hours after getting it.
When I open the task manager there are 58 running processes. What can I kibosh? On my old lap top I would just stop any process with capital letters...someone told me essential processes are all in small letters. But I'm not sure about this new Vista crap.
When replying please keep in mind I know next to nothing about computers.
Dumbing down is required for me to understand

google the processes. google knows what u are asking for and will give u websites that will tell u whether or not u can kill the process. i don't know if it works w/ vista, but i use a program called ccleaner to remove programs out of the registry's startup folder, this is different than the start menu start up folder. after removing these startup items, restart and u will have less shit going.

hey fonda... i don't have vista, but i was having simliar problems with XP and this is what i did. go to the start menu, click on run, then type in msconfig. under the general tab click on selective startup. only have these boxes checked: process system.ini filed process win.ini file use original boot.ini click apply then go to the services and start up tabs and uncheck everything that doesn't seem neceassary. but you must look up what each of them is if you don't know before you turn these off, or it can hurt your system i think. i hope this helps, vista is a lil different than xp. -bmiles

If it's crashing a day after you bought it, i'd take it back for a replacement asap. Maybe this is the quick answer, but honestly, laptops are one of those things you want perfect straight out of the box.
I'd make sure its not overheating before that tho. Is there some clearance under the laptop when you run it? One of the cooling intake fans might be under there.

I'd stop the services from even starting. When I get a comp, usually straight out of the box I format the drive to remove all the bundled and useless bloatware that came preinstalled.
Then I go into the settings and stop every single service from running except those that I absolutely need. Personally, I use all of black vipers settings. They have worked like a charm and make my comp run fast, and smooth as silk.

Wow, thank you, this blackviper site looks like I might be able to figure it out!
I'll try it, but when I get home I will just go back to a futureshop and demand they down grade me to XP.
Thanks everyone, and any more advice is appreciated

Hey babe, if it already crashed, I'd go with what I said in OTD, which is carry it back and demand one with XP on it, or at least a downgrade on that one. (For free of course)

It just crashed again.
I just called and demanded they change it to XP. The tech at the store says that new laptops are not compatible with XP, and that if it's crashing it is the laptop and I should bring it back for a new one.
Arrrrgh. What a pain in the ass!

I asked that already. New laptops are NOT compatible with XP anymore.
He also said that Vista doesn't crash and that XP crashes more. I call bullshit.

You carry it back and tell him that GoodbyeOrb said he should be fired if he thinks that the new computers won't run XP. When he asks who the hell GoodbyeOrb is, spin him around and shove it up his ass.
Seriously though, tell him he's full of shit as Microsoft even offers a downgrade disc(the link i gave you last night) so you know that the new ones will run XP. Also, you can tell him if he still doesn't believe you, that you need to speak to his manager. Then tell the manager that he's gonna need to hook you up with the downgrade disc for free. If they won't set you up, then return the damn thing, and go somewhere else.

That's complete and total bullshit. First of all.. I got this laptop about 3 months ago.. it came preinstalled with Vista, which completely sucked ass. So I installed XP on it. It was a royal pain in the ass and it took me 2 weeks to track down all the right drivers for it.. but I got it done. I haven't had any crashes since I got the proper drivers.
Secondly.. Vista has tons of flaws.. it's buggy as hell and it HOGS the shit out of system resources. My laptop theoretically should have handled Vista fine, but it lagged like a motherfucker all the time, and froze up on me even fresh out of the box with all the bloatware removed. I installed XP and aside from having to reformat and get all the drivers.. I have had ZERO problems with it since "downgrading". XP runs flawlessly and smooth on this thing.
Third.. this website was invaluable for me in comparing laptops and tracking down the right drivers and fixing problems - http://www.notebookreview.com/

Yeah, it'll work, just make sure you have ALL the drivers prior to formating, or access to a 2nd PC with a net connection while you are doing this.
If it's crashing this often tho, I'd exchange first. If the new one crashes too, then i'd go ahead with the format. To be honest tho, if the new one crashes also, you have a really unrefined product right there. And I'm not just talking about Vista. Do you have a link to your laptop?
