filter for blown furance heat
    #8030590 - 02/16/08 09:35 AM (15 years, 11 months ago)

the furnace/heater has large (~8" diameter) plastic covered, fiberglass hoses that lead heat to each vent. thinking about cutting one of the hoses allowing the heat to leak into the grow space to help heat it.

what sort of filter material would work well to help filter this air? tyvek? cotten t-shirt? polyfill? a cut up furnace filter (that material is plyable, right)? the filter would have to allow a reasonable amount of air through in order for the heat to serve any purpose, but this air should still be filtered as much as possible. the appropriate material will just be duct taped over the hole.

ideas?

having trouble getting the temps out of the mid to upper 60s. using a space heater or something similar is too much of a fire hazard, and most just blow hot air anyway which brings about the same filtering problem.

Room temp is OK, what is the temp in the furnace room?, how bout in the room where the water heater is? that cupboard over the fridge is usually pretty warm, throw a thermometer in it.
Block the vent in a room you're not using or turn up the thermostat.
check the air vent pipes, they have little baffle valves in them, are they open?
whens the last time you changed the furnace filter?
I put a box over the vent in my room and I got 2 furnace filters stacked over a hole in that box and taped down.
You still need a glove box or flow hood, regular filters don't clean the air enough to work in it.
don't cut holes in your house.
just throw on a sweater and make a "tub in tub"

the area that everything is in cannot be changed. room temp in that area is 65-68. TiTs, heat bombs, anything involving a worthless fish tank heater is a no go. they break after a few weeks everytime, i find them sitting the tub, the glass all broken, etc when they haven't ever been touched at all. and the entire space can't be just tit'ed.

simply trying to divert hot air from one of the vents. the air doesn't need to be "glovebox" sterile, just trying to reduce as much mold, dust, etc particles as possible without restricting air flow too much.

your room temp is fine.. it will just slow the process.. just dont use anything to heat the room... trust me.. it still works just fine, just a lil slower.. which shouldnt matter, because this hobby's main lesson is patience.. again... your temps should be fine... it stays about 70 in my house durring this season, and I incubate and fruit with nothing to up the temps...
