what sort of Fluorescent lights should i be using to grow from seed? just a regular fluoro desk lamp, or compact? also, what would be better, cool or warm light?

does it really need to be two or four foot long if the container you're growing in is only half that size? and instead of using two 20 watt globes, could you just use one 40 watt globe?
sorry for the retarded questions, but i know absolutely nothing about lighting.

yeah i think it would be only a square foot, if that. i only have 100 seeds so i don't think that would need much space. i only want to grow them untill they are ready to go outside.

i use 24" because the aquariums i have are 24"...if they were 36" i would use 36"
i prefer 2 20w over 1 40w because i like to have different ends of the spectrum.

for seedlings i dont think you need to get fancy with side lighting...they are not that big that they get shaded. either way, tinfoil costs like $1.

atm for my seedlings I have 2 24" fluro tubes, one's a sun-glo the other is a cool white. They sit about 30" over the seedlings which are in a dome. They might go a little red at the beginning, but so far I have found this to be a good setup, my last one was only 1 sun-glo and things seem'd to be etoliated.
