Got pulled over last night...have some questions.
    #8030324 - 02/16/08 07:38 AM (15 years, 11 months ago)

I got stopped for my car being all smashed in on my left rear corner. He stopped me a few months ago but they're asking $5,000 for the repair and I don't have that kind of money. He gave me $150 ticket and said something about taking it off the road, but what exactly is illegal about it? I just need the lights covered, correct? They still work...

Anyway I really need to do something soon because inspection is due. My friend said he'd do it for me and look the other way since my car is otherwise fine, but if the cop ever pulls me over in the future he could be like, "Who the hell passed your inspection?". Can't I just ghetto rig some covering on it? I don't care how it looks I just want it legal. I have about 2 weeks before inspection is overdue.

If the lights/brakes work I don't think the cop can do anything to you.

What's the ticket for? I'd consider showing up in court to contest it.

they sell a translucent red tape that will suffice to cover bare bulbs and as long
as your car poses no danger to anyone there's not much they can do

Ok that good. I had that mechanic friend take a look at it and he said the frame isn't bent or anything, it just looks nastier than it is. I'll look into that red tape too.

need to find out from the cop exactly what he views as illegal about the car,
there's nothing illegal about it being wrecked, it has to pose some sort of safety
hazzard, more often than not it's a lack of visibility like no rear lights at all
or something as stupid as the bare bulbs which isnt a hazzard, just distracting

I was lucky too.  I had a jar of weed and a bowl on me.  As he was walking to the car I stashed it next to my seat/in my car door without moving my shoulders just in case he asked me to step out.  Thank god I wasn't smoking .  I was actually prepared this time.

That is a bit ridiculous. Where do you live/drive? In Mass and New Hampshire, I've been driving my car with the drivers side pushed in and scratched up (my shocks are gone, too) for almost two years, and I haven't gotten any shit for it.

(I'm also female)

Best of luck..

I live in the burbs of Philly. The cop's like, "I'm surprised you're not getting pulled over left and right." I pass cops every day, I've even had them drive behind me for miles on the highway and they leave me alone.

If the rear lights are broken you have to get them fixed. That red tape shit is only allowed as a temporary fix, at least in this state. And I'm pretty sure they can still pull you over for that.

I'm really not sure, i heard even if the red plastic cover things are broken you can still get pulled over and bitched at for having that red translucent tape over it, at least in my state. then again only some cunt cop would pull you over for having tape on your brake lights.

  He pulled me over for something else a few months ago and saw it then so it's not the first time.  It's a small town too, the cops there don't forget shit like that.  I told him flat out I'm not paying the $5000 to the body shop, that I'm attempting to ghetto rig it and he just wished me luck.  By no means was he an asshole to me, I'm just confused as to why it's illegal.

Just go to a junkyard and pick up a light housing and replace it. Then go into court and tell them you got it fixed. They should dismiss the charges and not make you pay a fine. You don't need to spend 5 grand to fix your car just to get it up to spec.

Btw, what kind of car is it and what sort of damage is there? If you post some pics of the damage (or PM me) I might be able to help you track down a replacement part or at least point you in a good direction.

Cops pull people over for the silliest reasons.

When I was in my friends car we got pulled over because a bolt on the license plate looked funny. This car - and bolt - has been on the road for well over 10 years.

I've been pulled over for the same kind of broken tail light (just the plastic missing) and he gave me a fix-it ticket (You have 2 weeks to fix the car and if you bring the ticket in and show them it's fixed they tear it up).

All I had to do to get it legal was cover it with the tape already mentioned. It was then deemed legal at the police station so there's nothing else they can say after that.

Good to know. I'm going to try to find at least the plastic part too, I can gorilla glue it on or something, but I finally have a day off tomorrow so I'll head over to AutoZone or something and look for that tape. What do I do about the white light? Just clear plastic or something?

They probably have a specialty tape for that part of the light too. Just ask the guy at AutoZone he should know what's up (or it'll probably be right next to the red tape, which is specifically for taping over tail lights.

That's definitely cause for a ticket, so it wasn't as if the cop was picking on you like someone suggested.

As far as fixing it, the damage to the sheet metal and trunk is likely too great to just be able to replace the tail light housing without doing some sheet metal repair. If you just want to get it up to spec, they do sell some semi translucent red tape at autozone. I'm not 100% sure if that's a legal option though, but it's worth a shot since replacing those housings will be a pain.

They are probably checking for hit and runs that would fit your vehicle description and see if it's stolen, people like to steal cars and wreck them around here.

Thankfully my friend brought my car into his shop and gave me a lookover and everything else checked out AOK.  HE ever replaced my fluids and recommended some very cheap/durable tires.  All for $20 plus the case of beer I'm buying him.  I managed to find reflective tape that looks just like the headlight tape so I'll put my art skill to use and do it up.  Hey at least I have '09 stickers!  I'm LEGAL!!  AHHHH.  Time to pack a Hookah full of cherry and mint shisha, sprinkled with some buds, blow up a line of K and start final fantsy 7.

most cops dont even know the law, many make up laws on the
spot for intimidation reasons, cops generaly know the
handful of ordinances they'll be likely to contend with
regularly and of course murder and burglary and shit tends
to be some that stick in their minds but they cant cite what

Most police don't pick on people. They simply enforce the law and cite people for violations.

It is their job after all. It may be interpreted as picking on people by idiots, but it's their job. They see a broken law, they enforce said law.

Not to sound like an idiot or anything, but I've definitely been picked on by police before.

yeah it really has ALOT to do with where you live and or your race.

As a fellow Philly suburbanite(Langhorne), I can attest to the police dictatorship in regards to car condition.  It really comes down to police boredom.  Good luck ghetto rigging it though, I know how frustrating it is to have a perfectly good running car only to not be able to use it.
