I'm really not sure, i heard even if the red plastic cover things are broken you can still get pulled over and bitched at for having that red translucent tape over it, at least in my state. then again only some cunt cop would pull you over for having tape on your brake lights.

  He pulled me over for something else a few months ago and saw it then so it's not the first time.  It's a small town too, the cops there don't forget shit like that.  I told him flat out I'm not paying the $5000 to the body shop, that I'm attempting to ghetto rig it and he just wished me luck.  By no means was he an asshole to me, I'm just confused as to why it's illegal.

Just go to a junkyard and pick up a light housing and replace it. Then go into court and tell them you got it fixed. They should dismiss the charges and not make you pay a fine. You don't need to spend 5 grand to fix your car just to get it up to spec.

Btw, what kind of car is it and what sort of damage is there? If you post some pics of the damage (or PM me) I might be able to help you track down a replacement part or at least point you in a good direction.

Cops pull people over for the silliest reasons.

When I was in my friends car we got pulled over because a bolt on the license plate looked funny. This car - and bolt - has been on the road for well over 10 years.

I've been pulled over for the same kind of broken tail light (just the plastic missing) and he gave me a fix-it ticket (You have 2 weeks to fix the car and if you bring the ticket in and show them it's fixed they tear it up).

All I had to do to get it legal was cover it with the tape already mentioned. It was then deemed legal at the police station so there's nothing else they can say after that.

Good to know. I'm going to try to find at least the plastic part too, I can gorilla glue it on or something, but I finally have a day off tomorrow so I'll head over to AutoZone or something and look for that tape. What do I do about the white light? Just clear plastic or something?

They probably have a specialty tape for that part of the light too. Just ask the guy at AutoZone he should know what's up (or it'll probably be right next to the red tape, which is specifically for taping over tail lights.

That's definitely cause for a ticket, so it wasn't as if the cop was picking on you like someone suggested.

As far as fixing it, the damage to the sheet metal and trunk is likely too great to just be able to replace the tail light housing without doing some sheet metal repair. If you just want to get it up to spec, they do sell some semi translucent red tape at autozone. I'm not 100% sure if that's a legal option though, but it's worth a shot since replacing those housings will be a pain.

They are probably checking for hit and runs that would fit your vehicle description and see if it's stolen, people like to steal cars and wreck them around here.

Thankfully my friend brought my car into his shop and gave me a lookover and everything else checked out AOK.  HE ever replaced my fluids and recommended some very cheap/durable tires.  All for $20 plus the case of beer I'm buying him.  I managed to find reflective tape that looks just like the headlight tape so I'll put my art skill to use and do it up.  Hey at least I have '09 stickers!  I'm LEGAL!!  AHHHH.  Time to pack a Hookah full of cherry and mint shisha, sprinkled with some buds, blow up a line of K and start final fantsy 7.

most cops dont even know the law, many make up laws on the
spot for intimidation reasons, cops generaly know the
handful of ordinances they'll be likely to contend with
regularly and of course murder and burglary and shit tends
to be some that stick in their minds but they cant cite what
a safe vehicle is or isnt
