Bruno Sanfilippo And Mathias Grassow - Ambessence Piano And Drones  |  2008

Quote:

There is a clear connection between
Ambessence and the previous Sanfilippo's
title
Piano Textures. The floating, timeless
quality of the piano notes is still here,
but now the effect is more intense with
Grassow's textures couched in subtle drones.
Moments of irresistible beauty silently
vibrate and resonate inside,
opening a vast inner space of clarity and
spiritual emotion.
This work seems to require an intuitive mode
of perception that seeks to overcome
chaotic multiplicity and establish contact
with a deep and authentic unifying essence.
Beneath the calm waves of Ambessence lies the
promise of bliss.
by Marius-Christian Burcea - RFI Romania 2008

This release from 2008 offers 62 minutes of
cerebral piano tunes seasoned
with haunting ambience. While Sanfilippo
plays a sampled and processed grand piano,
Grassow contributes synth drones, glass harp
and bow chime.
A distinct combination of tradition and
modernism.
As one might expect, the music generally
consists of piano laced with textural flows.
The keys are stroked with tenderness, evoking
cerebral melodies steeped in a soft serenity.
The notes are far from repetitive, utilizing
a classical recital touch that comfortably
generates lush tunes of gentle beauty.

Meanwhile, the electronics bestow an airy
disposition on the tuneage.
Languid atmospherics settle upon each song,
immersing the serious piano chords
in a fog of ethereal majesty, enhancing the
overall elegance of the music.
These tones drift with little variance,
maintaining a sighing resonance with the
central tunes, following their congenial
progress with subtle association, ebbing and
rising
in tandem with the piano’s emotional state.
A certain transference goes on between the
piano and the tonalities,
flavoring each other with their personal
character.
The piano adopts a discrete intangibility,
while the wafting ambience
picks up a touch of regal eloquence. This
trade-off serves to further unify
the music into an undulant presence of
pacifying mien.

Yet there are instances where the textural
atmospherics move beyond their fragility and
attain a notable substantiality, sometimes
rivaling the piano’s lilting occupancy.
The compositions are tranquil and stately,
crafted for appreciation by an intellectual
audience. The application of ephemeral
atmospheric electronics only increases the
music’s introspective demeanor. There are no
surging tempos here, no surprise crescendos,
just steadfast structures of soothing
influence. by Matt Howarth -

Anyone know of any good bands that use hang drums? I've only ever found hang drum soloists.

Yeah, I've came across that guy before. He's way cool but I was hoping to hear the hang drum used in a band setting.

Hello everyone. Some really good stuff in this thread. Was wondering if anyone could help me oot?

Can anyone recommend any ambienty albums with a chime sound? Not sure if that will mean anything to anyone but am thinking along the lines of the attached - most beautiful sound ever!

M-Seven - Stimulus  |  2008

Quote:

M-Seven is where the mind meets the soul. It
is where the land meets the sea and it is
where music meets the influences of the
world. On M-Seven’s new release, Stimulus, he
delivers an injection under your skin that is
sure to bring on a high of wanderlust.
M-Seven drives your senses on Stimulus across
the globe with electronic, downbeat infused
with the sounds from around mother earth.

He hails from Quebec, Canada but you can’t
tell that from his creations. The different
ethnic instruments he uses are powerful
reminders of how small this planet really is.
His 10 years of musical production rain down
an obvious ability to produce beautiful
electronic melodies. On his previous release,
Activate, he displayed a prowess for mixing
beatwork with anything from ethnic flutes to
the occasional Middle Eastern vocals. And,
when it rains, it pours down with thunderous
power on Stimulus as he continues to deliver
more of his unique brand of music.

“Creative Tao” feels like a perfect awakening
for Stimulus as it fills the mind with the
sounds of the Far East. Soft vibes pan out
against a gentle flautist as we feel the
world around. It passes into “Galactic Surfer
Boy” under the hypnotic use of tabla drums
against a spiritual chant. The track “Fuelled
Exploration” is really a title of the
storybook for what M-Seven’s modus operandi
in music production might actual be. Curious
keyboards drive this track on a pace that
feels quick while at the same time it brings
a state of relaxation. “Oneness” and “Mind
Bend” add to the collection of 18 tracks and
stand out as more meditative but still
equally pleasing to the senses.

You won’t be calling Stimulus an ambient
soundscape by any means. M-Seven’s
interesting beats move his sound past the
realm of atmospherics. Explore the gentle
moods created under headphones as M-Seven
rounds the spectrum of airy synths with just
the right bpm to elevate the sound to
something peaceful yet uplifting.

Helios - Caesura  |  2008

Quote:

Keith Kenniff has been with Type from the very beginning, and now as Type
is well into its fifth year he offers us his fifth gorgeous release. In five years
Keith’s style has evolved constantly, with his drifting piano compositions
taking the Goldmund label and the Helios sound moving out from undreneath
the clipped beat-heavy electronics of ‘Unomia’ and into a more unique place,
even incorporating vocals on the ‘Ayres’ mini album. ‘Caesura’ however is his
‘proper’ follow-up to the acclaimed ‘Eingya’, and sees Keith return to the
instrumental sound he knows so well. In fact in many ways ‘Caesura’ is a
more electronic work than its predecessors, blending layer upon layer of
synthesizer and adding his assured drumming to come up with the perfect
meeting of indie-pop and ambient music. The haunting cinematic element is
still present of course, but these songs are more rounded and confident than
any in Keith’s career.

From the delicate bliss of ‘Hope Valley Hill’ which opens up the album with
gauzy nostalgia and, as the title promised, hope, through the chunky pop of
‘Come With Nothings’ it is clear that Keith’s music is as arresting as it ever
was. Taking cues from the lilting indie-electronics of Ulrich Schnauss and the
unfussy ambience of Brian Eno, Keith manages to inject this with his
knowledge as a composer. The epic harmonies of ‘Backlight’ for instance
reveal a lightness of touch rarely heard in the genre with sweeping
synthesized chords buzzing alongside Keith’s signature guitar.

Accompanied by more gorgeous artwork from Matthew Woodson, ‘Caesura’ is
a glowing record for the winter months, and a glimmer of hope to keep the
seasons at bay

Bird Show - Bird Show  |  2008

Quote:

We are proud to present the third album by Ben Vida under his
Bird Show moniker following his Lightning Ghost album from
2006 on Kranky. Bird Show, Ben's alter ego, is an active
member of a whole host of experimental bands including Town
and Country, Pillow, Central Falls, Terminal 4 and Everyoned.
As Bird Show he truly taps into the US free-folk psyche
movement which has been gaining a lot of deserved praise and
attention in recent years.

His new album, which is untitled, contains a whole host of
instruments including: Hammond XB-2, microKorg, Moog Voyager,
Gibson SG, slit drum, pan pipes, shakers, Vietnamese jaw harp,
tambourines, ride cymbal, congas, wood flute, ring modulator,
elephant bells, violin, qraqeb, zither, voice, ten string
harp, frame drum, finger cymbals, triangle.... to name just a
few. It is his ability to fuse together all of these different
sounds which makes Bird Show such a unique artist and which
makes his new album such essential listening.
