Atrium Carceri - Cellblock
This album lives – it lives, yet only inside your head. No matter how real the disc and the packaging may seem, once you turn out the lights and close your eyes, this record slowly builds up momentum, resurrecting itself inside the very outskirts of your mind, only to crawl closer and closer, taking bits and pieces along the way, and finally causing a total black out.
Cellblock is dark, yet beams of light can be seen if you look up through the rusted bars and shattered glass of the prison windows that you are now lost in. It’s despair made sonic: slowly but surely the end is coming near, you can keep on running, but you can feel that it’s coming to get you.
Simon Heath, one half of Maelstrom’s fave Orc duo Za Frumi, decided it was time for him to make some changes and set out to create a dark wave album that was equipped with a healthy dosage of intellect as well as atmosphere. Under the name of Atrium Carceri, he took it upon himself to deliver one of the best dark releases this year, and Cellblock is the result.
With brooding bass rhythms, sweeping soundscapes that invoke a sense of timeless deliverance, and a clever use of female whispers and male talk, Cellblock reaches a state of absoluteness. Cellblock becomes a cellblock. Throughout the album, isolation stands above all else, desperation creeps up and catatonia is the final result. Sometimes mechanical in nature, sometimes atmospheric, but always a very frightening record with a very unnerving end. Almost like a story except that once you take the time to actually start listening, you start experiencing and find yourself on Heath’s cellblock, awaiting execution from the long dead and decomposed prison guards.
With this essential debut album, Heath has set out to create something new and refreshing, yet give us something more than we bargained for. More than we could handle. There is no monotonous feeling found, no hope, no warmth... just a cell with your name on it.

Lull - Cold Summer
http://www.sendspace.com/file/t1nyro
Curiously the opening track on this album starts off sounding like a piece from a CARPENTER film taken down a couple of octaves. Unlike later LULL explorations, this still retains a strong structure, and has quite a charming, pacifying warmth to it which envelops the listener in smoky-black heat. There's a similar feel to this piece as to the VIDNA OBMANA / STEVE ROACH "Well Of Souls" CD - slightly Mystical Eastern with flute like sounds climbing over the top like lonesome seagulls. The second track sounds more like a cross between the first "Dreamt About Dreaming" album and ART OF PRIMITIVE SOUND - bones crushed to dust on the cold stone floor of a cave while bodies move around in the shadows - machines are humming in the background which makes the dwellers in the dark Morlock-like. Track three moves into fragile places once more - deep underground, yet warm as the fires of Hell. It massages you softly, almost lovingly, but has as much hidden evil to it's purpose (I feel) as had the "Murder Ballads" albums. A similar feel - lulling, passive, promising peace and comfort, yet it has enough darkness to never completely put you at your ease. The fourth and final track is less focused than the previous pieces, less adherent to composition, relying more on drifting imagery, flowing sounds filling in the gaps within structures. As such it again sounds more like the driftwork explorations of "Murder Ballads".In many ways I feel that this is the best of LULL's albums. While there are a lot of people doing similar work in the field of Dark Ambience (or Isolationism?), this album shows LULL to be at their most unique and powerful. It hangs in the uneasy space between cossetting beauty and dehumanized coldness. Personally I could listen to this for hours.

I'm downloading those seasonal songs now. Looking forward to listening. Reminds me of Coil's 4 seasonal EP releases, which I'll upload sometime today. It's one of my favourite albums.

http://www.sendspace.com/file/9p1cdm Coil - Moon's Milk (In Four Phases) - Disc 1
http://www.sendspace.com/file/i0v1xl Coil - Moon's Milk (In Four Phases) - Disc 2
Most fans have probably collected each one of the seasonal Solstice & Equinox singles back when they were released in 1998. Now that they're long out of print, a reasonably priced collection takes their place. With one slight addition: a live version of "Amethist Deceivers" recorded somewhere in Europe in 2001. The first phase: the Spring Equinox single, "Moon's Milk or Under an Unquiet Skull," was their first release with then full-time member, violist Bill Breeze. It's comprised of two drone-a-licious 8+ minute parts which sound pretty much like different takes on the same track. The next single, the Summer Solstice is made up of four vocal songs featuring viola and mad electronics. "Glitch" artists could easily learn something about song composition and using the laptop noise as a piece of the puzzle rather than isolate it and bore the listener. Disc two features phases three and four, with guests like Rose McDowell on the dark masterpiece, "Rosa Decidua" and their version of "Christmas is Now Drawing Near". Autumn's five songs to me don't seem terribly seasonally thematic, not nearly as much as songs "Summer Substructures" and "Bee Stings" from the summer EP and "A White Rainbow" and "Christmas" from the winter EP. I distinctly remember being the most excited about the Autumn release songs. Over three years later, "Switches" and "Amethyst Deceivers" still bring chills to my spine. Here, the group ran the spectrum from electric charges to thunderous percussion holding nothing back. The roar of the dark winter rolls in for the winter EP, which lyrically almost attempts to tie a connection as Balance sings, "Moon's milk spills from my unquiet skull and forms a white rainbow." Once again, the music also jumps around from styles, through glitch and viola vocal tracks to a reverberant sound collage, a serene digital bubblebath with spoken word, ending up on the string heavy Christmas song with Rose. It's a pain indeed to buy these all over again, and Coil have alluded to a live release so the bonus track could very well surface somewhere else. It's nice to have all the songs together without having to switch CDs every 25 minutes. - Jon Whitney

Windy & Carl - Depths
I uploaded this in the indie thread over a month ago, before this ambient thread existed. It really belongs here though, and for any of you who havent already downloaded it I urge you to do so ASAP. It is imo one of the best ambient records of the last decade.
