I rarely even use Bittorrent to find music now. My listening pleasures are moving more and more into the realm of independent artists that I'm lucky if I discover torrents for their music. Google's my friend .rar and blogspots.

Lustmord - Heresy

If 'dark and shining' and 'sublime power' sound like contradictions, like oxymorons, it's appropriate -- for the music of Lustmord is filled with opposites. The listener will find purity and evil here, darkness and light, power and restraint -- all combined and utilized to stunning effect. This is one of the finest examples of electronically-based music that I have ever heard. Whatever meanings and emotions the individual listener finds within these tracks, they are unquestionably moving, and extremely thoughtful in their construction.
The note on the rear cover of the cd states that this music was recorded in 'crypts, caverns, mines, deep shelters and catacombs', and that it uttilizes material of 'seismic and volcanic origins, taking advantage of 'psycho-acoustic phenomena and the physical effects of low frequency information'. The underground atmosphere is palpable in these recordings -- it's as if we were listening to the planet itself. As far as the 'low frequency' aspect -- it's definitely to the listener's advantage to experience this recording on a sound system capable of reproducing EXTREME low-end frequencies. At times you can FEEL this music as much as hear it.
Additionally, the painting reproduced on the cover ['The great day of His wrath', by John Martin] is quite simply astounding in its darkness, power and beauty -- it suits the mood of this music perfectly.
Highest recommendation.

Undiscovered Moons Of Saturn - Lost In Cosmos
(Review taken from www.metal-archives.com)
There are a few words which summarise the experience of "Lost in cosmos" by Undiscovered Moons of Saturn; ominous and hauntingly vast. Indeed, after listening to this album one cannot help but feel lost in an immense realm of infinity, gliding amongst endless stars and nebulae, evoking visuals of the endless celestial realm. And amongst this grandeur, immense insignificance sets in, a giant, vast expanse of nothingness, sprinkled with chaotic serenity.
This is the very atmosphere the music produces, from a technical viewpoint the music is seemingly entirely electronic - yet this is electronic music done well, I have not heard any other album capable of such an atmosphere as "Lost in cosmos", with its gargantuan, eerie drones (which can only be described as not of this world - like the reverberation of haunting darkness amongst lonely stars and worlds too alien to comprehend) and spacey keyboards (which make you float dreamily above the cosmos), truly this is an experience as much as it is great music, a work of art.
Beginning with the majestic, twinkling sounds of "Drowning In Magellanic Clouds" you are launched into space, followed up by "Osorion's Gargantuan Sea" (with long, immense synths) in which you will find yourself gliding amongst infinity towards the alienesque soundscape of "Movements Through The Asteroid Belt" with its reverberating, bass rumbling sounds, which I will assure you is beyond the otherworldliness of words, you have to hear it to experience it wholly - and I can't help but repeat the key word; haunting.
Next up comes "Music Of The Spheres", an alien (for lack of better words) melody which acts as a prelude to "Terrabyss: The Chambers Of Ganymede", which takes you from the realms of vast starry infinity to an alternate sort of infinity; the endless chambers of Ganymede. And it would seem that this is a little more frightening then gliding amongst nebulae, this song is filled with crashing, attentive sounds, and cavernous, lava-like rumbles - stuck in the terrabyss of endless chambers.
What could be next?! Well, "Cosmic Tide Of A Black Eclipse" is what's next, and as with the other songs, the name sums up the experience (and prepares you for the eerie sounds), the sounds here are different than the previous; slightly mellower, yet just as lonely - indeed, this song is as if you are reflecting on just how alone you are in this void. Just as foreboding in that eerie soundscape, and this time in the sense of being purely alone, this time however there is more than just the everpresent spacey bass rumbles - this time there is something like a grunging guitar - and an airy sort of synth, both of which are used subtly to add depth to the song, and to evoke the sense of cosmic tides rolling along the desolate void as you watch in solemness. The song eventually ends in a screaming sort of high pitched synth, marking the end of the cosmic tide.
A dark, ominous atmosphere greets you; "To Stryde Monoceros' Dark Pendulum". Twinkling synths not unlike the opening song are used here, as well as haunting rumbles (as usual in the style of this album), and dark, almost organ like synths emphasise the mood of this song. It feels hostile, it feels foreboding - that sums the song up quite well. After this, "Visions From The Caves Of Phobos" finishes the album up, and begins differently than other songs, a sort of gurgling oddity of a sound mixed with a high pitched whistle, and then a sort of mid-toned, stronger synth is used for the ambient melody throughout, while this song concededly feels a little more of a filler than the previous, it still has redeeming qualities (such as at 2:43, sounds like alien twittering passing across the thoughts), it was a disappointing choice to end the album however. For only one song that did not hold up as much strength as the rest of the album though, it is not of too much concern overall.
Don't expect jamming beats or headbanging rock-format metal here - but do expect a journey of alienesque oddity amongst the realms of nebulae, stars and planets. I've tried to write this review as the album seems itself; an experience. It would be extremely hard to find an album which perfects such cosmic ambiance as this does.
So if you've ever wondered what it's like to glide through the infinitely vast, mysterious yet forebodingly vast universe, "Lost in cosmos" is the work of art you are after.

Chris Schlarb - Twilight & Ghost Stories
'Twilight' delivers all the found sound, field recordings, tape hiss, and other such experimental atmospherics one could ask for, but also provides a more accessible element as well, sampling over 40 different contributing musicians. 'Section III' just might be my favorite experimental/ambient song from 2007, and apparently Sufjan Stevens himself is the one playing those sparse twinkling piano notes. Beautiful beyond words.

KTL - KTL 2

Well I had hoped that this collaboration of Peter Rehberg and Stephen O'Malley would last another couple of albums with what I see as drawbacks of the first self-titled album being ironed out so with "2" out, it looks as if my wish is coming true or (don't flatter yourself NDB) someone has actually read my "KTL" review on this website and passed the word on! And indeed this second album is an improvement in many ways: the musicians have a more integrated approach and the music is more atmospheric and very dark, and although none of the songs here is less than 10 minutes in length, all of them are interesting in their own way and don't seem as tedious as some of the long tracks on the first album. I think too that the musicians have also matured in the way they have tackled ambient music and widened their own musical horizons; from what I know of Peter Rehberg's music from listening to a couple of his early CDs and reading reviews of some of his other solo records, I gather he has not produced very deep atmospheric or mood music before and it was often very clinical in feel so working with O'Malley has definitely been an improvement for him.
The first track "Game" is a very slow glacial build-up, thick with floating mist and dark clouds, and segues straight into "Theme" which introduces a slow and steady beat and, about 5 minutes in, a long twitchy vibrato sequence of high-pitched, probably laptop whines that are like deranged organ notes on fast-forward which is joined later again by a second sequence of angry hornet swarm noises, probably guitar-generated. The whole effect is very trancey and blizzard-like; these noisy sequences follow a repetitive "riff" and build up continuously. As the track progresses you can hear something like an approaching avalanche as the laptop and guitars fight for dominance, oblivious to the oncoming catastrophe. Although this is the longest track at over 27 minutes, the anticipatory nature of the music leading into something of an anti-climax seems to make the time pass fairly quickly.
"Abattoir", recorded in a former ... abattoir (I'd like to know if this place is owned by the family of a former girlfriend of a guy I used to buy my CDs from, like that wintergarden place in Grenoble where parts of "KTL" were done - we live in a small world!), is a very menacing and delirious drone piece, superficially sounding more guitarish with a deep low-end rumble, not terribly musical at all, true, but deeply disturbing and very nightmarish nevertheless. This track is actually the most varied of the four as the bass rumble begins to murmur like a hovering UFO and the buzzing hornet noise spins and flies back and forth. More sound effects (distant background echoing machinery? a whirring metal blade?) put in appearances to make up a babbling chaotic chorus.
The final track "Snow 2", though still a dark piece like the others and featuring plenty of chilling moments, is a calmer piece in a deranged way. A cavernous ambience is the setting against which paroxysms of scrabbling occur and guitar tones rise from a far-off black tunnel in the cave complex towards the end.
As with the first album, this second release contains music that is in the stage production "Kindertotenlieder" which is currently touring in Europe. It wouldn't surprise me at all if "2" is tied only very loosely to that stage work which might serve only as a source of inspiration and samples of music. It might be interesting if KTL were to be a completely separate musical entity with the guys having to find their own sources of inspiration to create further improvised dark soundscape music. The music here on "2" demonstrates they can do varied mood music using a few elements and sticking to a abstract, minimalist agenda. However, this music can be quite demanding to listen to and as it is unstructured and very long, and there are virtually no melodies, it won't suit most people.
