YA's Album of the week #1
    #8028500 - 02/15/08 06:11 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

Every week I am going to post an album, and talk about why it is such an amazing album that needs to be herard by everyone... regardless of how much response I get.

but here is you guys chance to get back at the pretentious music snob i am. think of it as a challenge if that helps. Feel free to discuss the album, but only if you have listened to it... otherwise STFU.
now with the advent of torrents and various other media sources (for example you can listen to the album at rhapsody.com or pandora.com) you shouldnt need me to post some link.
I will however post some clip of media related to the album I am discussing so that even you lazy fuckers can bask in its glory.

so here it goes.

here is what Wiki has to say about it:
Quote:

Disco Volante is a 1995 album by the band Mr. Bungle. It is by far the most experimental of all their productions as it picks up inspirations from a wide variety of musical styles, including death metal, techno, 50's space age pop and Italian avantgarde. Many music critics have considered Disco Volante to be one of the strangest albums they've ever listened to.

Mike Patton also uses a great number of vocal effects boxes and samples throughout the album, most noticeably in songs like the circus freak-show rollercoaster "Ma Meeshka Mow Skwoz" and the psychedelic underwater adventure "The Bends".

The album also contains a hidden track (hidden in a double-groove on the vinyl release) after "Carry Stress In The Jaw." This track was originally recorded without bassist Trevor Dunn's input or knowledge; although, shortly before its release, Dunn managed to hear it and added a vocal track. Though never explicitly stated, it is believed (by Dunn) that the drums were played by McKinnon, and the bass by Patton.

The songwriting credits in the album's booklet include the section "Nothing - Words: Lengyel; Music: Heifetz". This is not, as some people believe, the name and credits for the end section of "Merry Go Bye Bye" (the song preceding it in the list), but is a joke at the expense of Lengyel and Heifetz, who had no songwriting credits for material appearing on the album.

"Carry Stress In The Jaw" is subtitled "Sleep: Part II" and "Phlegmatics" is "Sleep: Part III." Part I is "Slowly Growing Deaf" from the self-titled album. All three songs were written by Trevor Dunn, who didn't decide to make "Slowly Growing Deaf" part I until after the other two were written for Disco Volante. The three songs share themes dealing with body parts.

This would be Lengyel's final album with the band, leaving shortly after the tour due to "artistic differences." Heifetz would later comment, "I miss him. He added a huge chemical imbalance that helped us on the road. He hates us and rightfully so. The music changed, plain and simple. Very little call for saxes, trombone or flute. He was an original member. I'm not. Makes me feel a bit like a union-buster."

Here is track number 4 titled "Desert Search for Techno Allah".

The reason I picked this album is because it is quite possibly my favorite album of all time.
the only thing I dont like is the first song. I have no idea why it is even in there. it is boring, uninspiring and just doesnt fit.
so with that said.. start the album on track 2. Chemical marriage... it is very defining of the feel of the album: eerily jaunty.
this track should put a smile on your face and have you bouncing a little.
do not attempt to dance to this album though... not even alone, because you will find yourself lost and embarassed even then.

but anyway this track is more like a primer for the entire album.. it gets you in the mood for the madness that will ensue, also, it is recorded very low, to trick you into being blasted by the next song.
Carry stress in the jaw is a wickedly complex song which also houses the "secret track". One listen and you realize why it refers to carrying stress in the jaw... it is capable of producing a panic attack in some people.
One of my favorite parts about this track is where Patton screams and pounds on his chest to get that unique sound. The do such a good job with this song of having a metal feel, but not producing the anger, angst or other emotions that too often accompany a distorted guitar and screaming.
at about 5 minutes in, the secret song comes on and it drops the feeling into this feeling I can only describe as Sly. I almost feel like a sexy detective when it starts up.
I used to think that Dunn's old man voice and baby whine ruined the song, but now it has become a welcomed treat.
Desert search for Techno Allah is unlike any song they have ever written with a backbone of techno and sanskrit-esque lyrics that give it a mystical feel that mirrors the wide open reverb they use: "Quiyamat".
the song is a journey in itself and follows the familiar valleys and peaks of traditional techno music... but what I wouldnt give to stand on stage and scream like he does with that delay and verb oh so right with the darkness of the music behind me... you will know which part I am talking about when you hear it.
Now this next song is the title track of the album, and quite possibly the crowning acheivement. Tailored after italian opera it still carries the theme of being eerily jaunty.
this is where you really can appreciate how well the album is mixed. as you travel through the song, so do you travel through the story, into different rooms and occurences.
as it spirals out of control and you find yourself reaching for that button to skip the song, out comes the mouth harp and the bandeon to make everything ok again.
Patton does such a good job of transcending the foreign lyrics to pour out their intention... when he starts singing, it gives me the imagery of an insane circus announcer doing his bit in an empty room.
there is so much to this song, my words dont do it justice. it is just simply a perfect song.
The next song is done from the perspective of a 5 year old. the lyrics start out "my mom is better than your mom and your dad too". then explodes into a pink floyd like grandeur that makes even quadropelegiacs throws their arms up.
the end of the song is a grimly distorted recording of a child being tickled, but will haunt you and give you chills. it brings to mind the kid from Pet Sematery 2 clutching the scalpel under the bed.

that is all I can get to for ruight now. I will continue the abridged synopsis later.
BUT GO DOWNLOAD IT NOW! OR BUY IT.

let me also add that you should all really get this album.

going through life not knowing its splendor is like going through life not knowing what the color blue is. This album single handedly changed the way I perceive art... so in part, it actually changed my life.
I cannot emphasize enough how much knowing this album will enrich your life.

I already own this album (along with the other 2). Definitely my favourite Mr Bungle album. It took me a while to become comfortable with it though and it mildly annoyed me when I first heard it. Then one day it clicked and since then I've adored this album.
It's well worth the effort to absorb.

I remember one time I drove aroud all day listening to one minute from the bends starting at 7:03... the part where the arrpegiator is on the sax with that big verb and delay. it makes me feel epicly evil.

Hehe. I like the end of the Bends where whoever it was that was dying finally dies, and there's a huge racket of what sounds like something taking off. I've tortured people in the car to that track many times.

Whenever I go into the record store on campus I always notice the little tab sticking up from the CDs that says "Mr. Bungle", and I always think to myself "If YawningAnus (actually I still think of you as psilocyberin) knew that I walked by this section every time I'm in here, but I've never even heard a single Mr. Bungle song, let alone contemplated grabbing one of those albums, he would probably slap me."

One of these days I'll check them out.

or on Merry go bye (the last track) where it has that dopey surfer rock song about the telescope and then breaks into deep shredding metal. it always makes people laugh and say wtf.
the drums on that track are ridiculous though.

That's really one of the album's highlights. Going from laid back lounge into death metal.
"This song is pretty nice"
"Yeah, wait for it..."
"Umm...is this the same song?"

Almost as classic as the confused and disturbed (uncomfortable laughter) when me and some friends subjected drunk, tripping and some guy on MDMA to Ma Meeshka Mow Skwoz. All while bobbing our heads like parrots with a crazed look on our faces.
Then again, I was tripping myself and there's nothing as hilarious as Disco Volante on a few tabs of acid.

I think it has to be the greatest tripping album there is. especially if you know it and can play with all the changes.

I have probably honestly listened to that album 1000 times front to back.

Certainly a great trip album. It keeps the trip very interesting
One of my friends asked for it to be turned off a few tracks into the album; said he didn't like being confused when he tripped.
