What Does Holistic Mean?
    #8028004 - 02/15/08 04:19 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

I see the word from time to time, but never gave it much thought until today. They opened up a Holistic Doggy Snack Bar next to my work. I figured if dogs were gettin in on this, it was about damn time I knew what was up.

So what the hell is Holistic or Hollistic Medicine?

Quote:

Wikipedia says:

Holistic health refers to a philosophy of medical care that views physical and mental aspects of life as closely interconnected and equally important approaches to treatment. While frequently associated with alternative medicine, it is also increasingly used in mainstream medical practice as part of a broad view of patient care.

The normal term holistic refers to covering an approach from all angles. 'Holistic' medicine usually refers to all the new age herbal junk and a bunch of other stuff that imo doesn't work. It could be good for the psych though.

Holistic medicine is not just about flaky garbage, although the practitioners of flaky garbage tend to use the term a lot. Naturopathy is holistic, but it's also scientific. Even conventional doctors are starting to get into holistic care. It just means viewing the body as a whole, and not isolating parts of it as separate from the rest.

The "flaky garbage" stuff is definitely detracting from the term. It immediately throws up a red flag when I hear it. From "doctors" too, especially the ones trying to sell you stuff or new techniques.

Ok, according to the American Holistic Health Association (AHHA). They define Holistic as:

*Balance and integrate your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects

*Establish respectful, cooperative relationships with others and the environment

*Make wellness-oriented lifestyle choices

*Actively participate in your health decisions and healing process

I gotta say, this seems to be about the most general word I have ever come across. It encompasses just about anything and everything under the sun.

It isn't a specific discipline, it's more of a general foundational concept.
