my lady got it for me for v-day yesterday. far and beyond the coolest gf i ever had. but anyways. it was the 40 dollar one at walmart and the temp is preset. it doesn't give an actual temp, but says 500 watts. that won't be too hot will it? for drying the mushies of course.

Hahaha, I LITERALLY just came to this forum just now to post about the temperature of the 500 watt dehydrator I just got from Wal-Mart.
It is a Nesco/American Harvest Dehydrator & Jerky Maker, can't find a model number, there is no temp. setting, just plug in and go. It is 500 Watts. 38 bucks. Found pictures of the exact model here: http://www.makeyougohmm.com/20071108/4929/
Anyway, yeah, what temp. does this get to, any guesses? I still have the receipt, thinking about taking it back and getting one that goes to 95 degrees on eBay for maybe 40 or 50...

Oh and an additional question for anyone who answers, would it be best to cover this in any way to keep out light? I know light is detrimental to shrooms, moreso than heat I'd imagine. And this is clear. So I was thinking of like wrapping the clear parts in foil or something to keep out light while drying.

the question remains: will 500 watts be too hot? I have no idea how to convert watts into fahrenheit temp if even possible. watts/kelvins completely baffle me.

The generic cheapo Nesco that's adjustable which also happens to be 500 watts has settings from Low at 95F to High at 155F. Crank that bitch, 125F is what I normally use but 155 would not be detrimental in the slightest.

Hmm, hope that's correct. Drying and heat is probably the only subject that has the most contradicting 50/50 opinions.

I wonder what RR has ever said about drying and temperatures and etc.
I've read a thousand different opinions from a thousand different people, but never RR or Roadkill or any of the super mycology gods.

RR never said anything in his vids about drying, you can (and are expected to) pm him if you want him to look at your post. I think he does less drying because he doesn't do psychedelics (or the growing at least) as much, or he gives that impression.

There are varying opinions here about heat affecting potency. Personally, I don't notice any difference between shrooms dried by fan or at 155F in my dehydrator, which is the highest setting on mine:

Most dehydrators that are preset run around 140-150F. IMO, you shouldn't have any problems, but I'm SURE someone (who probably doesn't know WTF they're talking about) will come along with a different opinion.
A few links supporting my opinion:

I almost bought that one but I was like FK that, its 10 dollars more for the one with the adjustable temp, walmart just doesn't carry it. Instead I fan dried them and it took 24 hours to get them around 80%+ dry, put them in a small container with some silica packets and they were cracker 8 hours later.
