found this and was wondering something...go on, read it
"Mushrooming up over night? If the body is spread out and microscopic, how do mushrooms grow so quickly? There are two basic reasons: 1) Since they store up compounds between fruiting and most fruit once a year, they have a lot of reserve available to support the mushroom. 2) Mushrooms develop differently than plants or animals do. Plants and animals grow through cell division - to get bigger they have to produce more cells. Cell division is relatively slow and requires a lot of energy. The mushroom body also grows by cell division. However, the mushroom fruit does not grow by cell division. Just about as soon as it starts to develop, a mushroom has almost the same number of cells that the mature mushroom will have. The mushroom increases in size through cell ENLARGEMENT! This means that the cells can balloon up very rapidly. Very little energy is required, basically the cells just enlarge with water. So a mushroom can increase in size as fast as water can be pumped into its cells. Almost overnight a mushroom can go from a pin head to a large mushroom."
why not pick mushrooms when they are still small thus conserving water? if they already have the same number of cells, wouldn't they still be as potent? easier to store and eat? would picking them as pins screw up later flushes? the less you need to mist or water a casing the less chance of contamination right? am i on to something here or am i missing something?

from what i've read, it has to do with dry weight. so, the amount of psylocybin/psylocin must be related to size/weight.

i'm assuming that as the mushrooms absorb water there is some kind of process that contributes to the amount of psilocybin in the mushroom.

From what I know, psychedelic mushrooms keep producing psychoactive alkaloids until the veil breaks (about this point). At that point they have the best rate of weight to alkaloids, so -logically- the best time to harvest them is right at that point. Therefore picking pins would be pure bullshit.
If you don't want to take any spore prints, harvesting them at this time is also contributing to later flushes since the fruits keep using nutrients and water as they keep getting bigger, which exhausts the substrate additionally.
Oh and what I forgot:
I can't really tell you if this is the way mushrooms work, though I've heard about it too and it would make perfect sense.
Just think about your dick and the principle should be obvious
So if you're just after the fruits for consumption, pick them right before the veil breaks for the best weight/content rate.
When it comes to outdoor beds, it's another thing, because you want the mushrooms to drop their spores and create new patches. The best thing you could do for keep getting constant results, is to refill the patch with fresh wood chips (obviously only for wood lovers ). This way, the patch will keep producing nice amounts of fruits without exhausting too much AND you support mother nature at what she's best at: fighting for territory!
