My parrot just died

in my arms 2 hours ago. She woke me up because I heard her ruffling around in her cage. I look in there and she's having a seizure and shaking.. I took her out of her cage and started petting her telling her I'm sorry it hurts. She had 2 more seizures within 5 minutes and passed away. The whole ordeal lasted less than 10 minutes. I have no idea why the hell this happened. The vet couldn't explain it either. She was completely fine last night.
I've had this bird virtually my entire life, my mother hatched her when I was 4. My mother passed away, so I've been her human for a few years.
She was the coolest parrot around. She would make sounds of percolating like a bong, then cough, then laugh.. Or if we coughed after taking a rip, she would laugh at us. She opened beers for me, or if she saw me grab a beer she would make a CRSSHH sound, like a beer opening. Every night when I turned off the lights she would tell me "Gnite!"... She had a huge vocabulary (150+ words), this is just a few of the things she said.
R.I.P. Bartholomew, you will be missed by many! 1989 - 2008

Is that an African Grey? Looks like one. They're supposed to be the most intelligent of all birds. My favorite character in Michael Crichton's "Next" is the gentically modified African Grey.
Sorry to hear this, man. African Greys are supposed to be pretty long-lived, normally. I wonder what the problem was?

Thanks everybody. I really appreciate it.
I wish I would know what caused this. I'm going to be doing a lot of reading today. I mean, she was supposed to outlive me and i was going to be giving her to my kids.

“Greys seem to need more calcium than some other species,” said the Johnsons. “But calcium alone is not enough. It takes a number of other nutrients to properly absorb the calcium, such as magnesium, lysine, boron, vitamins C,D, and K, which are all part of the calcium complex. We have seen greys who were having seizures and the veterinarian was giving them calcium shots, with no results until the other parts of the complex, especially magnesium, were given.”
Don’t think of giving calcium, or any other dietary supplements, until you speak with your avian veterinarian about your bird’s diet and health. “Greys don’t metabolize calcium as easily as other birds, and can become deficient more easily,” said Pattison. “Greys are known to have calcium problem, but don’t supplement unless it’s under the advice of a veterinarian. I feed 70% pellets and 30% seed and I’ve never seen a problem in my birds.”
I found that. Who knows, it may have caused the seizures.

I'm really sorry to hear about your parrot man... Pets are so much more than just animals. Parrots are damn smart- some as smart as chimps and other apes supposedly. I dont know what I would do if she died. Shes the smartest and sweetest lab I've ever seen. I don't think I'd be able to handle it.
I hope you feel better bro.

Damn that sucks. If I ever got a bird it'd have to be a grey.
One of my neighbors has a parrot and it sounds like a dying cat when I go outside.

Yes, she was. A Congo African Grey.

Thats an interesting bit of information. I doubt that was the problem though, I don't think it would cause 3 seizures in a row and then death suddenly without warning. With no signs prior at all. Thanks for the info anyhow.

Depending on their age, you could get one for anywhere between 600 and 1000 bucks, but expect to pay more than a grand for a hatchling. It's a good investment though, their average lifespan is about 60 years.
I'm going to have her cremated this afternoon. The ground is frozen solid here so I can't bury her anywhere. I'll probably spread her ashes where I spread my mother's, seeing as it was her bird initially.
Thanks again everybody.
