Yeasayer - most psychedelic rock show I've seen in a while.

I can't say enough about this great young band from Brooklyn, Yeasayer. The first time I listened to the record, all I was left with was this need to tell people how interesting I thought the music was...that may not sound like the highest compliment, but I'm so inundated with crappy poppy indie rock all the time. When I heard Yeasayer I knew these guys were on to something..

Finally got to see them live the other night and holy shit...they put on an EXTREMELY psychedelic show...it's not just the lights and the visuals, but even their playing style, and the way they sort of seamlessly mix prerecorded tracks with live performance...the Indian guitar player is some sort of evil snake...can't take yer eyes off of him when he's playing that guitar with sitar-style riffs.

They're a hard band to pin down...one minute they were spacy, totally out there, and two minutes later I'd think, "geez, this sounds like something I would hear on K-Rock..."

Anyway...check em out. Here's the first track off their debut album All Hour Cymbals. It's called "Sunrise".

I dig it man, I'm always looking for different music with talent. Voice is kinda weird on this song, but I bet its pretty cool live.

Nah that's not true at all..if you check out the "Indie Albums Thread" TrippinTeddy made there's a link to download it there and pretty much everyone posting in that thread has listened to them I'd say. I'm pretty sure tiny rabid birds went to see them.

i definitely wish i could have gone to one of those shows up in NY. i had a feeling their shows might be something special.

nice...cat's cradle is the last date, and that's my favorite music venue by far. you should see a show there if you ever get the chance. there's a lot of history in that building.

i've never seen man man either. that might be kind of cool.

I thought the Wex (place they're playing here in CBus) handed out a flyer that had that show listed, but I checked their site and it wasn't on there. I know nothing of either Yeasayer or Man Man, but I hear the names a lot so I guess I'll check 'em out to see if I wanna go to the show.

What'dya think of Vampire Weekend, by the way? I really enjoyed their show.

I said somewhere else that Man Man is like watching a bunch of pirates on acid performing a musical on the deck of a ship in stormy seas.

Oh man you should definitely check both bands out. Both are a lot of fun recorded but a great deal exciting live too. I thought Vampire Weekend was all right. Lots of energy, but not you know...the second coming. It was good.

Good, I'm always looking for good live shows, and the Wex is never too expensive.
I really enjoyed VW's singer's presence between songs, and their opener definitely exceeded my expectations. Sam Buck Rosen... I think they're from NYC.

Listening to these Yeasayer tracks right now, I'm diggin' this. Thanks for the uploads.

This is some added on shit they do at the end of the first track I posted...just a short clip from somebody's cell phone. I haven't looked around at their stuff on YouTube a lot.

yeah, i saw yeasayer with MGMT at the Local 506 about a month back now. local 506 is, if anything, low-budget. so there wasn't a lot of psychedelic visualizations or lighting when i saw them. however, i can definitely attest to the guitar riffs taking you on a trip. very fun band to see live.

and i talked to the lead singer and drummer for a while after the show. seemed like really cool, down to earth guys.

I don't get why...it's not even a genre, it's just a label people slap on to music that has lost all meaning if you ask me...there is so much different, varied music under that one umbrella title of "indie rock" that to avoid that entire group of music is a great way to miss out on a lot of good stuff. There is amazing music being made in this day and age.

Lately I've been listening to a bunch of Yeasayer, Sam Champion, Blitzen Trapper, Fleet Foxes, the new Stephen Malkmus is getting CRAZY play in our household, I'm on a huge "Tonight's the Night" kick, that's just an amazing Neil Young album.

No problem! I have such a good feeling from this band. So much new shit pops up and goes immediately under, I hope they don't. The first time I listened to their record, I just thought, "Wow, this is not like anything else I have heard in a while...it's interesting!" Then when I saw them live I decided I was hooked...Got a lot of thoughts on their record. Have you DL'ed the whole thing?

I actually just finished downloading the whole album on SoulSeek.  I can actually dl and burn shit now that I've fixed my laptop.

Any other suggestions?

This stuff is brilliant - reminds me of Depeche Mode meets Of Montreal or something.

Dirty Projectors! Pretty sure I upped that in the Indie Album thread. Would love to hear your opinion of it - total weirdness.

Any specific album/song?

They only have one album it's called Rise Above. With Dirty Projectors I really recommend just giving the album a full listen if you can spare the time/earspace. It's weird in so many ways, all the songs are different and yet the album is cohesive. it freaks my roommate's girlfriend out.

Acid doesn't give you truths; it builds machines that push the envelope of perception. Whatever revelations came to me then have dissolved like skywriting. All I really know is that those few years saddled me with a faith in the redemptive potential of the imagination which, however flat, stale and unprofitable the world seems to me now, I cannot for the life of me shake.

Soulseek returned several albums, but it might be a different "The Dirty Projectors".

DLing Rise Above now.
