i do neither. I just simmer, rinse sludges with warm water, let the excess water drain off, put it in a jar, and pc for an hour. 0% contams here, great water content, no clumpy grains.

I can never get it perfect either. people on here always talk about '10 days' colonizing time, but mine's at least 15 days even using LC
when I first started wbs I soaked 12 hours and then simmered 30 mins, but lately I've been soaking just 24 hours and it doesn't seem to have made a huge difference

let me preface by saying that i used to soak for 24, rinse, then pc with no simmering. i think i still prefer this if i have time
but that takes 24 hours and sometimes i just can't plan that far in advance. who knows what i'll be doing tomorrow?
now i bring a pot of water to a boil, remove from heat, dump wbs in, cover and let steep for an hour. when it's done, drain (well) and pc.
i can't tell any noticeable difference between this and the 24 hour soak

I do both, Soak for 12-24 hours(overnight) Simmer for 20-30 minutes Drain for 30 minutes Pc for 60 minutes @ 15 psi
Total time = 2 hours

My WBS quart jars colonize fully in 6 days using a LC.
The soak is used to allow for the endospores to germinate so you can kill them when you PC, as some endospores can/will survive the high temps of a PC.
