STS9=Pink Floyd of our generation?

Initially i got into sound tribe by listening to some live recordings and studio work i got off soulseek. I was definately drawn to them once I finally gave them a shot.. the fusion of drum n' bass, dub, jazz, rock, etc, that they pull off is really one of a kind, imo. There are a few other acts out there, i guess, but I think STS9 does it best.
Having grown up listening to stuff like pink floyd, zeppelin, the clash, and loads of other classic rock, psychadelic rock, ska, alternative rock, and old punk rock, I have a definate love for the live act. A dj or producer just can't really measure up to someone playing an old-school instrument like the guitar, bass, piano or drums.
The fact that all the members of STS9 have pretty well mastered both a "live" instrument, as well as computer software and digital or analog hardware, is really impressive. It's really hard to grasp just how much goes on during some of their songs until you see them live.
I'm not going to try and describe their show.. google and youtube can provide plenty of eye candy..
The point of the post is, I can't think of any band that i've heard of in the past few years.. except maybe The Flaming Lips.. that are really doing some forward-thinking music, and a really amazing live show. STS9's show incorporates some really fresh music, really talented musicians, and a great light/visual show.
It's going to be really hard for any kind of music to come out now and make an impact like Pink Floyd, or the Dead, or Zeppelin, or the Stones, or any other famous live act. But, I think STS9 deserves a definate nod in the realm of Floyd... psychadelic rock, really, done extremely well and using todays technology as best possible.

I remember hearing people talk about them on the boards here a lot, then I saw they were playing Lollapalooza last summer, which I was going to be attending, so I decided to check them out to familiarize myself. I'm fucking glad I did. They're live show is awesome. One of the best live acts I've ever seen (up there with Daft Punk's pyramid, Joshua Redman, the Marsalis Family, and Tool.) I didn't get a taste of a complete live show until this past fall in Columbus, and it was absolutely incredible. I hope to see them many more times.
I could sit there and watch their drummer play for hours. He's pretty much all I focus on when I've seen them.

at first, i just watched the two drummers.. but, in Las Vegas i was stuck watching the guitarist all night.. not in a bad way, but man, he can seriously play the guitar and ableton, or whatever he's playing off of when he's hammering that midi-keyboard.
They're all really talented. See you at langerado, right? gonna be a killer show, i know it already.

Radiohead is the Pink Floyd of our generation. Epic rock with lyrics that sing about both internal emotional turmoil and external societal pressures, all coming from a very scary psychological place and turning it into something beautiful.

i still don't get it..
that stuff's for cutters.

seriously, though.. I don't see them as fresh. Unique, maybe... they definately have their own sound. But, how many depressing ass songs can you really make?
maybe i need a refresher course or something.. I just can't remember a song of theirs that didn't drone on and leaving you feeling slightly sadder than when it started.

you know i would be in total agreement with ya Yos, i grew up listening to and going to rock and punk, hardcore shows.. hell ive even seen pink floyd after "momentery lapse of reason"
and yea on the fresh tip i think the tribe is way ahead of most others....i dont think they are quite big enough too have floyd status, but i think they are every bit as talented and important in the scope of things.... hell the fact that they are turning young people on to the jazzier side of music makes me excited..and like you said the mix of traditional and computer instruments is the shiznity..
i hadnt been doing any shows because of the stale lame ass live shows going on , but after first hearing and loving the tribe ,seeing them locked it down ,and like the tribe said ,their shows must be experienced to be believed... i see alot of older fans dissing their newer stuff at the moment , but hey they are growing , and who wants to keep playing the same setlist every year , they dont want to be piegon holed into the same stuff, at least thats the way i feel and i love the fact that there is no singer fucking it all up and the scene they generate is wonderful...most shows have a great vibe and cool peeps guess im a old tribe kid at heart, def the best thing going(live shows wise) Tribe

I totally agree.
Funny thing about STS9, David Murphy went to my high school, tho a few years ahead of me. One of my ex-connects is good friends them.

I'm surprised so many people feel that way about Radiohead. I'm with OMR.
And as far as tribe goes, I've never seen them live, but any recordings of live shows I've heard (and that's quite a few, I used to date a "tribe kid") aren't my cup of tea at all. I'm sure they're great musicians.

STS9 is a jamband and a mediocre one as far as I can recall. Jamtronica at its finest no doubt, but still, take that for what it is.

Hmmm I personally don't see why there should (or even possibly could be) a Pink Floyd of our generation. STS9 sure ain't it. As great as Radiohead is, and while they definitely will be remembered as one of the most epic and creative forces of the 90's/00's music era, WHAT do they have to do with Pink Floyd??? Unlike Pink Floyd, Radiohead have never been known as a psychedelic band, so I just don't see how mentioning them in this thread is relevant. The Flaming Lips would be more appropriate to compare to Pink Floyd really.
Apparently there must be alot of people out there waiting around and hoping for the next Pink Floyd or Zeppelin to swoop onto the scene. But why is that important? There may never again be a single band which leaves that much of an individual impact on music, and maybe that's ok. I have plenty of friends who latch onto ONE band, becoming completely obsessed with them (whether it be Tool, Pink Floyd, Metalica, Radiohead, etc). While it's great to be passionate about something, I'm not so convinced that being fixated with only a handful of particular bands is healthy. There are literally hundreds upon hundreds of bands and artists out there making music who at least deserve a listen. So why not give one of them a shot, instead of listening to Dark Side of the Moon for the 300th time in your life?
just a thought.

I think you're right to say that to be stuck with one band or small group of bands is pretty close minded.
I love sector 9 for their diversity. They put on really solid shows that are nothing short of a jazzy, funkadelic dance party. That's what I love about them. It's just good times.
There will always be people that don't dig them. Everyone has different opinions to what sounds 'good' and what shows ' rock'. It's really all relative.
They are talented musicians that know how to throw down a damn fine dance party and I love them!

If anyone has the honor of even being close to "the Pink Floyd of our generation", it's Oceansize! Listen to their debut album Effloresce, it's fuckin epic. They sound like a mix of dredg, Radiohead, Tool, Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree, and older Incubus. Easily one of the most talented and underrated bands of our time.

Oceansize is great post-rock, but I wouldn't compare them to Floyd or Tool.
There are just too many similar sounding bands out there right now.
There is just so much music out there these days that it's near impossible for a band to reach everyone.

Oceansize has it's post-rock moments, but can be as heavy and massive as Tool also...sometimes more so. The way they compose songs reminds me alot of Tool's song structures, long (avg. 6-10 min) and complex. They use odd time signatures and use them well, switching between 7/4, 11/8, 15/4, and others seamlessly throughout songs (but not like dream theater. they don't rub it in your face that their music is technical and complicated. sometimes you have to really listen for it). Their drummer can and should be placed in the same class as Danny Carey, Neil Peart, Gavin Harrison and whoever else you think deserves to be placed in the list of elite drummers (sorry if i didn't list your favorite drummer, don't blow up at me). Their music has to grow on you sometimes, like most great bands that never seem to get old. Long story short, Oceansize is a talented underrated band that deserves more attention. My favorite by them is their debut album Effloresce, but I recommend literally everything they have released.
I don't have any torrent links, but i'm sure they wouldn't be hard to find.
by the way, the music on their myspace right now doesn't give the best impression of them...

They're good, but like Soularize said we shouldn't get hung up on one band, there are THOUSANDS of great albums out there waiting to be heard.
My roommates listen to Tool and the Melvins over and over again and I try to turn them on to new music but they don't even listen to it.
Make sure to check out bands like ISIS, Pelican, UFOMammut, Lent0, Across Tundras, Boris, Caldera, Bossk, Rosetta, Tides, Windmills By The Ocean, 5ive, etc.
I discovered most of these awesome bands thanks to posts in the Avant-Garde Metal thread.
Pink Floyd were quite heavy for their time in their early days, if there is a PF of our generation they are most definitely Metal.

Oh I don't get hung up on Oceansize only, don't worry. I'm always open to listening to new bands! I just can't help but try to spread the word about them because I have such strong feelings for them. I really believe they are one of the best bands since the 70's, and that's a big deal for me. I used to be too closed minded to newer music because i didn't like what i heard on the radio and thought that was it. Then i realized that you really have to search for most of the really good bands these days. I get most of my recommendations from http://www.progarchives.com/ and last.fm
I've heard of, and listened to quite a bit of, Pelican and Isis (more so Isis), but haven't heard of the others. I will check them out, thanks for the tips Avant-Garde Metal is an interesting category...i've heard some really great and some dreadfully awful bands from that genre.
I don't know if the "pink floyd of our time" would be metal per se, but definitely a heavier band pushing boundaries like you said. I still stick with Oceansize, as they fit this description. They flow from grace and beauty to sheer power within a song and within an album. all the best parts of ambiance and metal brought together in a totally new sound.
