Hunting Strain Question...

I noticed on the Hunting Locations page that my state has Panaeolus papilionaceus var. papilionaceus & Panaeolus subbalteatus.
Now, I have cultivated some Golden Teachers before, which falls under Psilocybe cubensis and i know those are some good shrooms to be had.
That being said, I plan on hunting for some shrooms this spring, but i have no idea what the said mushrooms are. Obviously i looked is up, but the type in my state i found on the Hunting page is completly foreign to me. Are they in fact magic?
If anyone knows anything at all, please let me know.
(I did not ask where in my state or what grows in my state according to the forum rules. I am simply asking what type of mushrooms fall under said names in general. Also, i did look it up, but there is nothing i can that is usefull to me.)

Check out this guide

Well yes, the rules used to have the suggestion to use the Search Posts function.
There is plenty of info here about those mushrooms from over the years.
As soon as these strippers leave and the pcp wears off I am going to amend the rules.

Cool. ty for the info. I hunt for morrels in my home state, but those are not the fun ones of course. Tasty, but not what quite hits the fun spot lol. I would hate to get bad info on anything i plan to ingest, so ty for answering me.

I was looking at the Pan Subbs on that link. LOL i see those all over the place on new lawns. I know there are some look alikes, so this spring i'll be posting some pics hopefully to clarify if they are in fact the real magic Pan Subbs. Those pic's are exactly what i was looking for. TY again.

panaeolina foensecii. A very inactive lookalike to panaeolus subbalteatus, generally much more common. They look very similar, but have a purple-brown spore print, rather than the subbs black.
what state do you live in?

Sometimes they are. It depends on what species you have that you are calling papilionaceus.

Indiana. I was thinking of just cultivating some more Golden Teachers instead of picking wild ones. I don't want to grow them indoors again, im a parinoid person so i was thinking about finding a good spot to just drop some cakes in a humid area. Usually here all summer long it is nothin but hot, muggy and humid.

If you live in a suburban area, you can find subbs on sod. Sod that is pretty young is the best. I would bet Indiana has a good subb climate in may and june. And, like Implee said, you have to eat a lot. Some subbs are surprisingly potent, but most are fairly weak.
Alan, I think there is a mix up in those species in panaeolus (papilionaceus/sphinctrinus), seems like no one really knows which is which. I've heard reports of active sphinctrinus. Who knows if they were in fact sphinctrinus, but... never heard of active papilionaceus.

LordOfChaos,
Ok well, "strain" is not the right term.
Panaeolus is the genus, and subbalteatus is the species.
I do not believe Panaeolus papilionaceus to be active. That could be debated though.
I do not ever remember hearing of a single person finding Panaeolus subbalteatus in Indiana or Illinois. They have of course been recorded to grow there, so I bet that I could find them myself in those states.
Start by looking in horse pastures (maybe cow pastures too) and in lawns, during the spring and summer. So you have plenty of time to research a basic understanding for yourself if you are interested.
Subbs are a good shroom.
