i found this in the upper part of south carolina in the woods around 4 pm in feb. can anyone tell me what this is. thank you.

it was poking through leaves on the ground. there was alot of sweet gum trees and oak. a little pine and alot of rocky soil and huge rocks jutting up everywhere with a stream about 40 feet away.

hmmmmmmm. Pretty tough to tell without seeing a mature specimen, and not having a good picture. But, it isn't active. It may be chroogomphus vinicolor.

Definitely not active. It is hard to tell exactly what it is without a clear picture of the top of the cap.

It would also help a lot to know what the spore print color is. Looks like it could be white, so maybe it is Armillaria.
