Ground popcorn grain?
    #8023068 - 02/14/08 04:20 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

My friend bought some popcorn grain before I could show him these threads and the error of his ways.

Now what?
He has all this popcorn laying around and hates the taste.

Could he grind it in a coffee grinder and sub for brf?

Would pc'ing this kind of home made flour turn it into 'mush'?
What if he just partially ground it?

Any ideas?

Is there any use (besides as a snack) that popcorn has in the production of (edible, legal) mushrooms for my friends use?

You can use use popcorn as a substrate for cubes.
You just can't make cakes.
In fact it will colonize faster than BRF.

Use it up and case it with 50/50+

I would toss it and buy some wild birdseed. You might be able to use it in a pf mix. Corn has a lot of nutrients. I once tried to grow spawn with popcorn whole. The results were poor at best. I was a noob back then. Do a search you can find some info on corn.
Good luck

I've read that popcorn is the worst grain to use as a substrate.

That's what I told my friend.

That's why I'm asking what other uses it has OR how it can be modified to be smaller yet not turn to mush.

Sorry I wasn't more clear earlier.

Alot of people use different grains, but it's easy to case it directly and really, there's only subjective differences.

I've heard people say on these boards that popcorn is bad, only to have experienced growers say it doesn't matter but that they typically don't use popcorn.

I got popcorn for my first attempt at grains.

So...cracked corn is just ground up popcorn?
Like grits?

RogerRabbit and Agar say it's the worst of all the grains over and over again and those guys seem to know their stuff.

I've also seen RR tell someone that since they already bought it to just use it up and switch to rye afterwords.

Seems like the situation here to me... Besides why waste it when even if it isn't the best substrate, experts agree potency is 90% genetics. Corn has enough nutrients in it to feed the Indians so why wouldn't it work for a fungus???

Just follow a grain tek and get some lasagne trays (aluminum), get a tub fill with perlite and water, case 50/50+, fruit, harvest, enjoy, and move on to rye or backwards to BRF...

I certainly won't go back to BRF...

I use popcorn as a grain substrate and it has worked great for me both in 50/50 casings and G2G transfers. A Qt jar fully colonized in about a week and a half, even faster than that after a G2G (approx. 3-4 days).  Needless to say, I like popcorn.
