Findings from a stroll in the woods, TX
    #8023010 - 02/14/08 04:08 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

Here are some of my findings in the woods. It has been in the 70s the past week or so and a nice storm came through last night so I decided to go for a stroll. This is some of what I found and I don't know what they are:

What is that red stuff on it? I found it growing off a fallen tree limb.

Found on a tree limb laying on the ground.

Found this one growing on another fallen limb. Whenever I pulled it off it had like yellow puss at the place where I tore it. Here's another pic:

Found this baby growing in cow shit

This one was growing from cow shit too. Another:

This one was growing off the side of a fallen limb laying on the ground. Another:

Found these growing on the side of a fallen limb too. The gills are a different texture though. Instead of straight lines they are like interwebbed..idk how to explain it.

I found more growing in cow shit but I want to ID these first before I waste anything. Thanks!

Woah, you have a lot of pictures there. Looks like you had a nice time. 1-4 are pleurotus mushrooms, probably pleurotus ostreatus, a good edible. The ones in the first two pictures are rotten, don't eat those. The cowshit ones look like psilocybe cubensis. The blueing gives it away. Then, the tree limb one looks like a pluteus of some kind, maybe cervinus, not worth eating. Then, you have a stalked polypore of some kind, inedible. Nice hunt mang.

Lol I didn't really plan on eating any of those cause I don't know which the magic ones look like cept for the cubie. I found 3 other cubes growing in cow shit but they were itty bitty and I don't want to be greedy. Hopefully they will grow and release their spores so more grow.

Are oysters "magical"? I saw them growing off some trees like crazy but they looked kinda nasty IMO, just how they clump together and there was yellow puss coming out, which went away and is now white. If so, geez Mother Nature sure gave me a good Valentines Day present she must love me.

And that one with the weird texture gills is azure? Interesting

I'm south of Houston but above Galveston

No, no azure anything. The one with the weird textured gills, called pores is a stalked polypore, inedible. The oysters are not magic. They are a tasty mushroom, as in they taste good to eat. Yeah, some of them look pretty rotten though.

the cubes are magic. The others are not, the oysters should be a good edible if they're not rotten.

It doesnt have a veil and isnt bruised blue plus its pretty much white.

Cubes usually have a golden faded cap

With a purplish veil on one side but the veil is usually that whitish color, plus the gills are usually purplish/brown/black/whatever from spores but they dont always have spores or are washed out or whatever...

And does that other cube actually bruise blue? because it doesnt have a veil either. You didnt pull a Paul Stamets and color it with paint did you? It does have the shape though.

Noooooo. The cubes are in pics 5,6, and 7.

You found that one growing out of a fallen branch, remember? It is in the Pluteus genus. Cubes, from the Psilocybe genus, only grow from manure. Cubes also have dark purple-brown spore prints, bruise blue, as seen in your cube pics, and often have a ring, or remnants of ring on the stem. The only psychedelic mushrooms you got are in pics 5, 6, and 7. In Texas, the only psychedellic mushrooms you find will probably be growing on shit of some form.

It doesn't hurt to do some research on your own too. It is very rewarding in the long run!

Oh I am researching now! I just wanted to get some real time support since this is my first time picking and I don't want to die lol.

so can I just clean the cow shit and throw the cubes in a blender with some OJ or dry them? I'll probably take some prints first, but I read that cubes are more potent while fresh is this true?

yep. Might as well print them. Try not to beat em up too much though, as that decreases potency.

They are more potent fresh.

technically they are more potent fresh, but if dried correctly they lose very minimal potency. they taste a bit better fresh too IMO, but I wouldn't eat a fresh mushroom unless i'm 100% sure it's not gonna kill me.

#1 - Pleurotus, maybe P. ostreatus.

#2 - Likely Ps. cubensis

#3 - Maybe Hebeloma

#4 - Pluteus petasatus or some other pale species.

#5 - Polyporus arcularius

edit: nevermind, I found it in MushD. I still don't know how you figured that one though.

The more opened shroom after that baby cube pic isn't also a cube? I thought it was just more mature cause it was open and has a nipple, not a different species entirely. But then again I'm the n00b lol.

I have them printing right now, hopefully the rain didn't make it inside my horse trailer or it will be ruined.

EDIT: So I don't waste space for a new thread, it's my first time eating shrooms, so is 2g fresh the same as 2g dry?

no, 2g wet is not equal to 2g dry...2g wet will only be equal to about 0.2g dry. mushrooms are about 90% water by weight. you should take some time to search the archives, they are very helpful. there is lots of information in this site that is not hard to find. anyway, good luck with your mushroom endeavors. hope you learn alot before spring, because soon enough you'll have more mushrooms than you know what to do with. the gulf coast area in Texas is prime for cubes! (and copes)

No, cubes lose a lot of weight when they dry. I believe 2g fresh would dry to .2g. or 2/10 of a gram. Don't quote me on that. 2g fresh probably isn't enough to feel anything. Edit: what slashpro said.

Pictures 5, 6, and 7, are the only cube pictures you have. Nothing before those pictures, and nothing after them. Just 5, 6, and 7!!!!!!! ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Take your fresh weight and divide by 10 so 20 grams fresh is a nice 2 gram dose BUT some mushrooms will be near dry some water logged so keep in mind its just a guesstimate

dude, fresh potency vs. dried potency is negligible with cubes in my experience.

If anyone remembers my summer haul of cubes, they were extremely potent, even after drying. Even after not even sitting in a refrigerator for six months.

Both spore prints turned out black-purplish and I have 4g total. It looks like the stems have shrivelled up over night too. I won't be able to feel that? =[

I was hoping to have a journey this weekend.

Need to ID some more.

These are the ones I found but wanted to let them grow. However there is a massive storm coming and I'm sure they will die so I harvested them. Are they cubes? Found them growing in cow shit:

Stems seemed to bruise blue-whitish, and gills are blackish purplish, but they are also wet and I want you guys opinion. I'm printing them now so I can be extra sure they won't kill me.

I'm looking forward to finding enough active gyms to enjoy them...

And copes. Lots of copes. I'm gonna figure a way to get legit access to a cow pasture this year for the duration of the season. I got my scheme on...

Hey man keep in mind my field last year was a horse field!

It had TONS of plant life though and tall weeds... It wasnt a nice pretty field... It was one of those fucked up fields you see off the side of the road with all kinds of fucked up texas plant life growing on it...

Have you ever found gyms before? I havent, my goal this year was to find gyms and copes

I found some gym lutes last summer, but don't know if they were active or not (no bluing that I could say for absolutely positive) but I did take spore prints, and kept them. I plan on finding a good spot to try and cultivate them and maybe get a good crop going to attempt a bioassay on them.

I have some spots I wanna check out that someone on this board sent me keymap pages of where he has found gyms. I know basically where to look, but actually finding them will be interesting.

I'm planning to go out on an excursion to find some really soon. I know of some wet areas that look very promising.

:crazy2::thumbup:

I remember getting a post from someone new to houston. He said every local park he checked out he found gyms but he was new to texas (i believe) so he had never found cubes or copes... This was about a year or two ago though.

I might check out some forest life and stuff soon
