Hey farmers has anyone every used miracle grow spangum peat moss for casing material with success. I know that it has a bit of extras in it for plants ie fertilizer. Ive never used it before always 50/50 with verm and unfertilized spangum. will this be damaging to the myc and give a bad grow or contams. dont want to ruin my sweet ass poo boys. haven't been able to find organic peat. im thinking about using Organic potting soil instead any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

On my first casing I used 1 part shangum peat moss to 3 parts potting soil (oops)
It's really takin' offnow though, man. I got a pretty decent pinset and yesterday the mushrooms grew about 2 inches!!!
So, the miracle grow peat moss will work even with potting soil. I kinda think that the potting soil is giving up alot of nutrients to the myc. Good luck

You Don't Want NUTRITION in your casing layer....its a breeding ground for contams as contaminants/bacteria need nutrition to grow from.
And people who use MGMC=Miracle Grow Moisture Control are freaking idiots...it's the same thing as Peat Moss and Vermiculite with non needed addatives.

Yes. It works fine. I mix it 50/50 with verm and a little lime and crushed oyster shells.

Hey, I'm just saying I made a mistake. I understand that the casing layer is for moisture, but I spray it enough as it is. So far I'm havng good results and the fruitbodies look way better than they did off cakes.

Have you seen the results from some of the 100% coir casings? amazing pinset/fruit bodys.
My buddy still swears to coir over peat. I dont blame him, you should see his results
i still buy the 100% canadian by the bale though.

Now this statement is some bs. Peat w/o additives is much more recommended... the miracle grow stuff WILL work, if in a bind.
Lets see some pics, dill.

not to mention the price but, an 8 quart miracle grow bag is as much as a 2x2 cubic ft. bale of 100% canadian.

That's just moisture based and coco coir does not hold a lot of moisture as much as peat would...Peat/Verm pins better....you CAN use coco coir but in very small amounts like 50/40/10 peat/verm/coco coir but it's not advised...Here i'll show you why straight coco coir casings suck balls.

Actually, coir holds WAY more water than peat. Do you have any of your OWN experience using coir or miracle grow peat as a casing, or are you living vicariously through the people whose links you keep posting up?

Ditto here. Coir as a bulk sub uncased works beautifully as well.

All methods can be great on this site, you have to learn your own way of working with them.

the miracle grow will be fine. It does have fertilizers but these are not the nutrients that you should keep away from. Plants fertilizers have things like nitrogen in them. This isnt the stuff that the mushrooms are feeding on.
AS for coir as a casing material, using this basically turns your casing into a cake. Cubes do not need casing this is why it works.
Has anyone tried coir in their casings when growing pans or agaricus?
-------------------- Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you. Agreed. I just find it hilarious when people make recommendations on a subject or product they have little to no experience with themselves.
